Differential Questions

If that was directed at me, I said in my first post that my vanquish underdrive rear diff fit perfectly.

Don’t think that was aimed at you.. just that if you overdrive the front and underdrive the rear you’ll end up about 20% and that’s respectable for a trail rig

The first part was a response to you portal axle/ground clearance comment, the second part was not. My apologies. The second part of the post was just meant to be a restatement to the conversation of what Fricker said about OD/UD.

It's a locker in the sense that it locks the half shafts to the ring gear so everything rotates together as opposed to and open/selectable differential.

Agree to disagree..

Its definitely a spool and not a locker.

Oh, no doubt.
I was just explaining (as far as my understanding) SSDs use of the term "locker"
I could be missing something. Is the locker you were referring to something entirely different? Other than a locking cabinet/container?

Makes sense, I assume they call them that based on marketing.

Lockers as I know them from wheeling are automatic, or selectable as you said.

I am use to seeing open, spool, or a LSD in the RC world.

I've seen the selectable lockers for crawlers as well. Which was what threw me off when looking for what the SCX10 comes with, which should technically be called a spool, but I'm sure more people are familiar with the term locker than spool.

Either way, sounds like axial just sent my replacement gears out, so we will see how long these last.

What are you all using for diff grease? So far, ive used the stock grease, which seems like junk, lucas marine, and lucas heavy duty.

Also, does anyone have a good part number for a shim kit that fits these diffs? I just randomly went through what I had and happened to have the right shims, but will need to get some more.

Okay, so by "locker" you were picturing something like the Traxxas T-lock differential, gotcha. I've just always heard both terms thrown around without much clarity on which device one is referring to. I never thought of "locker" as "able to be locked".
As far a grease I use, whatever I have on hand honestly. I know it's not ideal but I (usually) don't run my rigs quickly so I've never been too concerned about slinging all my grease off. Lately I've been using some silicone marine grease I picked up at my LHS. It's was only a couple bucks, there's enough to last me while. It works to get the gears wet and get the truck running but I wouldn't rely on to stick to your gears at high speed.

Can anyone recommend any portal axles around the $100-$200 price range?

Either complete bolt on portal axles, or maybe something that adapts to the stock axles, and some better diff gears?

Looking at reviews online, nothing seems to be very good under the $200 price range?

I have the SSD portals on my Mighty FC rig. They are a little pricey. You will spend more than $200 if have to purchase lockers, gears, etc. They are also kinda wide. I use the TGH wheels on the FC to bring the wheels back in under the flares. But they are of very good quality - and they have gear reduction (1.14:1). If you're so inclined, you can also use the SSD offset front axle tubes to get a more scale appearance. They work for me.

Ar45p’s when you catch them on eBay, new take offs $170 shipped.
Or buy the 10.3 kit sell what’s left for $200. I’ve done that also. But they’re offset pumpkin up front

Now there's an idea. I'd be willing to buy the rest of the truck from anybody looking to do this.
I've considered buying a 10.3 a few times but I'm not a fan of portals on non-portal 1:1 trucks nor the modern Gladiator body. The platform interests me though and I could use some diversity in my mostly Traxxas fleet.

Where do you shop? The only place I found is hobbytown and they dont seem to keep much stock.

Honestly, I forgot you live so close to me [emoji28]. I grabbed that marine grease from HobbyTown far too long ago. Even then, they didn't have many options for grease. I do most of my RC shopping on Amain unless I need to pickup a common Traxxas part or Traxxas batteries, then I'll head into HobbyTown.

Yeah if I got 10.3's id probably just get a 10.3 and drive it lol.

If this new set of gears does not hold up, ill try a set of vanquish gears.

I agree with the comment about portals not looking right on a lot of scale rigs. I think ill save them for a comp crawler build if that ever happens.
