Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and trying to get back into RC cars again, its been like 25 years. So with the guberment giving me money I figured I would do a splurge/impulse buy on an a new kit. I really like the Traxxis and Axial kits, but the price was off putting since I'm not sure how long this phase will last for me.

Anyways, I found an RTR Team Associated CR12 Toyota FJ45 for $185 and I purchased it without finding or reading to many reviews. Does anyone have any experience with this kit? My goal was just to find a cheap toy to play around with in my back yard. If I can get back into RC cars, my goal would be in fall 2020 to build a kit and actually spend some money doing it correctly.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say.

Thanks,
Andrew

For playing around with in the yard or places that don’t have lots of big rocks they are great
I have lots of friends who run them on trail runs
Just not lots of clearance
For that you would want at least 1/10 scale

Apples to oranges between the trx4 and the cr12 but I have them both and although the cr12 is nothing like the trx4, it's still a pretty fun and capable rig. I've got mine linked below if you wanna check out my impressions on it...

High Plans Drifter, your review was the one that I found and made me pull the trigger. Your FJ looks so awesome that it made me want to do something similar!

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

I think you will be able to enjoy it and know more what you want come fall 2020 when you are ready to buy a kit

Thanks, OP. Unclear.. if you already bought a cr12 or if you're going to wait a few months? Certainly if you're going to wait that long, something else may come up before then that's larger ( 1/10 scale) and more capable.

Did you read his entire post?

I’m basically in the same boat, just got the same truck. Haven’t run it a whole lot, but so far I really like it!

I just bought a Gen8 for $269. Definitely a cool truck. But, if I'd seen the CR12 FJ45, I'd have gotten that instead.

Like any hobby or even the real 1:1 trucks, there's always something bigger, faster, more capable. I've built a lot (!) more 1:1 trucks than RC.. I've had locked 300+ HP CJs on 35s that made stock Wranglers look like minivans on the trail... then I'd 'wheel with Jeeps on 38s... and my CJ would feel like a minivan. There's always a bigger obstacle, deeper river...

I think that you did good getting the gen8. It's absolutely more capable than the cr12 no question. I already had three 1/10 scale rigs so I bought the cr12 to fill a niche/ void. It's a really fun rig but the gen8 will go a lot of places that the cr12 won't.

TOTALLY agree - the Gen8 is a killer little truck. My point was that there's always something better. The Gen8 outperforms he CR12... but the Traxxas outperforms the Gen8 and a modified Traxxas outperforms a stock Traxxas... and on and on. It's how incredibly capable stock jeeps evolve into buggies on 42s.

Not knocking that dynamic either... I'm guilty of it - haven't had a stock 1:1 car or truck in 30 yrs. I swore I'd keep the Gen8 stock because it performs great. Let's see if I can stick to that for 90 days ;-)

Full disclosure: It's currently disassembled. I loved the bright orange and black... for a week. It's powder blue now... with some rust ;-)

As someone that has built up four full-size Jeeps ( currently '08 Rubicon on 37's, trussed/ sleeved, 4.5" LA, PSC steering, Reid knuckles, etc) you sound a lot like me lol. I always tell my wife that "I'm going to keep this one pretty much stock". She's gotten pretty good at rolling her eyes at this point lol.

But yeah... Many more capable rigs than my JK out on the trails. Same with my little trucks although none of those are stock either lol. Can't wait to see pics of your gen8 with the weathered paint. Gonna look a lot better than the shiny orange.
