Every decade has it's idiots. We're just at a point where the idiots can share their idiocy instantly on social media. My high school years, there was the cinnamon challenge. Middle school was the single idiot snorting apple cider powder because he thought it was funny...
We didn't have cameras in our pockets that would instantly make those people instaFamous. And before that, there were people that fell for snake oil salesmen tactics...

Nah, back in the late 90's... it was good. People actually were thankful for the apps we were developing. Development was able to carefully plan out the next release due to monthly release cycles. Quality of code was much better because things were thoroughly tested.
Then came agile development. What was great for developers at first got taken advantage of by the business folks when they caught wind of it. Now it's rush rush rush. I want that feature now! Why is it taking so long! Let's try to cram as much as we can into 2 weeks!
It also doesn't help that a lot of non-technical people like to think that they're "technical" because they know "buzz words" or took a basic course. Why is this app taking so long to build? Isn't it just html and css? This can't be that hard.
It also doesn't help that this field is "en vogue" with a bunch of these boot camp code/campers that come out after 3 months and sell themselves off as full-stack developers expecting to get paid like developers with years of experience. Even worse when HR has no idea how to screen these people before interviews. Now everyone one wants "full-stack" developers.
Don't even get me started on full stack developer as a minimum requirement for coding jobs now. What does that even really mean? You want a jack of all trades master of none? You want someone that is basic level in all areas? Or do you want a guru in all areas of which there are very very few people who are actually expert level in everything in my experience.
I have more to rant about.... but I gotta go eat.

IT guy here. Most days I still love my job, and it makes me a really good living for this area. My employer makes me feel valued and appreciated, lots of small perks, all my benefits are free, etc. But the demands on my free time get old, that's really the only downside for me, so that's the rant part. I make all these plans every year, and never do 1/4 of what I plan to do due to my job getting in the way. The older I get, the more I wish I had picked a career where when I left work at the end of the day, I was done until tomorrow morning, and weekends more than anything. No being on call, or getting called in at 3AM on a Saturday.

Yeah in this field... it's gotten worse as far as work life balance. All these gadgets just make it easier for employers to make us work more.
I work from home.... but I am LITERALLY CHAINED TO THE DESK. I have PM's hitting us up at night, asking us to work weekends because the client needs it now.

We have two IT guys responsible for a relatively large manufacturing complex employing almost 1000 people with fully connected/automated manufacturing systems. Anytime I see them they have that sunken cheek, bleary-eyed 100 yard stare I hadn't seen since right after the Gulf War.
I think we should call the syndrome PIST...Post Informational Stress Trauma.
