I don't have any spare intel cpu's. I have old amd's...
My ex-roommate had nearly an identical build except with MSI parts. However, he moved out early yesterday morning. Otherwise I'd start swapping parts to see if I could diagnose the issue.

I did memtest, intelburntest(which put my memory utilization up to 98%) and other misc memory tests. But I guess I can pull a stick out and see what happens.

I did just notice that my bios was running the ram at 1333Mhz instead of the 2400MHz they are rated at. So, I took that off auto and I'm trying to find the timing area of my bios to make sure it has the memory timing right. I don't think frequency would of caused these issues but timing could.

If it doesn't go away after adjusting those settings, I'll pull a stick and ram and see what happens. I just wish the issue was more predictable so I can do a good job at diagnosing.

Yea...I have always been under the assumption that memory can be run at any frequency under their rated frequency. But I guess not.

Some can, some can't. You can run into some weird divider issues, too, if the memory takes 5 clocks, and the CPU wants it's information after 4 or 3 clocks.

I did have an awesome set of DDR memory that I ran at more than double it's rated speed. I still have it, in fact, though it has (shockingly!) gone quite bad by now. XD

Damn thing is doing it again....and I checked my memory frequency and timing and all is as I set it when it stopped acting up.

I don't understand this damn thing. It might be a short in the case. As all I did was move it from my old house to my new apartment. And first time powering it back up it starts doing the damn on/off cycling again after 15-30 min. Then, after reboot it froze up again in windows. So I don't know what the hell is going on with it. I know the motherboard has a fail safe in it so overvoltages cause it to shut down.

I wonder if a USB port is shorting out? I have alot of usb stuff plugged in and the cords don't appear to be in fantastic condition. I guess I shall unplug it to a bare minimum.

Ehhhh. I was having a USB short, all it did was disable all of my USB 2.0 ports until I fixed it. I also had to reinstall my drivers...

Strip it down to components, use a clean eraser and clean all of your contacts, and reassemble...

According to my motherboard. The powersupply was surging. I just got this message after several cycles.

Is this enough to warrant a warranty claim to corsair?

Ok, I'm pretty confident its the psu now. Last time I tried the self test button, It was fine. But now it's acting strange. I have a video uploading now. I'm gonna submit the video and the screenshot above to corsair and see what their thoughts are and if they'll warranty it. (It has a 7 year warranty, only a few months old)

Unstable power makes for an unstable mobo fer shure. This is why I ran almost all my crunchers on Tech Stations. Love being able to get at everything and change things out rapidly. Used to have 7 beast rigs on WCG.





A good utility with a small footprint for checking out your PC health is HW Monitor from CPUID. HWMONITOR | Softwares | CPUID I also like their PC Wizard for an all in one PC Map. I was really into overclocking and one the simplest and best tests of stability was to run a Mersenne Prime Search using Prime. The latest 64 bit version is here Prime95 (64bit) - 28.5 Download - EXTREME Overclocking. It is easy to see the effect of changing the subtimings on the RAM with this test. Efficient RAM settings (not just speed) show up with reduced Prime search times. Bad settings result in a lock up or blue screen when stressed.

I've had great luck over the long run with Corsair power supplies. They over build them and have a rigorous QC regimen.

Yes, I have the CPUID HWMonitor and Prime95....I have stress tested my machine many, many, many times and nothing never fails.

Which is why I'm thinking it has to be a intermittent issue with the PSU. Memory and cpus don't just work fine one day and not the next, They are either toast or good. And if the motherboard notified me of psu issues then I feel like the mobo is fine. So I'm, pretty sure it's the psu.

Toss a new PSU in it. If it stops happening, then good, RMA the bad one and keep it as a spare, or sell it on CL.

Yea, I got an RMA number today...I send them an email, they asked for proof, I gave them a link to my video and picture and then I was issued a rma number.

What's lame is that I have to pay return shipping for their flagship ultra reliable psu that appears to have failed after a couple months of light use.

I replied to them with this comment, lets see if they'll give me a shipping label.

If the thing failed after a couple years, I understand some components may just bite the dust early. But a couple months? In a flagship ultra reliable model? C'mon...I splurged for their expensive model, I feel like I should be able to pay for the return shipping label.
