Just another crawler newb, joined to get some ideas. I currently have a Kraton 8s, Outcast 8s and a Kraton 6s with every part M2C Racing makes on them and a way overpowered Traxxas Max that has a 6s Castle setup in it. I’ve got bored with the bashing and looking to get into crawling.

I’m torn between buying a Vanquish VRD carbon or doing a build complete from scratch. I usually end up dumping stock parts for aftermarket stuff so I figured I’d be better off just jumping into a custom build from the get go. What chassis would you guys recommend going with if I did a custom build? I’ve been looking at a few different ones but they all kind of look the same.

i prefer scratch builds and ya most of the chassis these day look alot alike sometimes i make my own sometimes i buy premade ones but i dont have any preferences on store bought rails
I’ve watched a ton of crawler YouTube lately, I kept seeing a bunch of MEUS builds pop up. They look decent but so does the stuff from Rock Pirates, I’m liking their Rum runner kit.

I only build from scratch now. I used to buy the kit and then upgrade everything but it's just as easy to pick the stuff you want and go that route. that being said the cost can go up quickly. I like comp crawlers and cheater rigs. I am not too much into the scale stuff, more performance. I would suggest getting yourself a kit, building it, seeing what you like and don't like, and go from there. Meus is an up-and-comer for sure. they have some good stuff. Rock Pirates is legit and made in the USA. you have to evaluate your budget and what you want to get out of it. I have been collecting parts for 4 months on an RC Speedy Moon buggy, I am well into 1200 and I am not done yet. but that is the way I operate. Everyone has something different they like and are into.

welcome and have some fun!

I have a VRD carbon in my Amain cart right now, by the time I added all the extras I wanted it was around the $1100 mark. The other issue is I’m in Scotland so getting stuff shipped over here adds to the cost. The closest RC shop to me is about a 100 miles away, we have a few big online retailers but the prices kill me. I’m originally from the US, I’ve been here for years but still convert prices from £ to the $.

Are you just looking to do trail runs? Planning on competing? Just want to kill hard lines?

The VRD Carbon is a great kit. It can be a good starting point for someone looking to compete and can hold its own in competition with a good driver. With that said, for the really tough stuff, I prefer a more forward skid with a smaller/lighter transmission. Some of the chassis go a bit extreme with the forward skid and ends up causing other issues.

The Rum Runner looks nice but that price is nuts. $350 for a chassis, skid, sliders, body mounts, braces and links. Nah.
