Well, this has been a fun holiday season. I haven’t touched RC Crawler since 2007 and sold my TLT Bender setup shortly after that time. After recently playing with drones and learning I just can’t FPV, I decided to come back to crawlers.

The new Axial Capra really caught my eye after a friend recommended I take a look. I had been really eying the SCX10-ii builds and thought that would be the direction I’d go. I was wrong. The more I looked into the Capra the more I knew I had to have one. It was everything that I loved about RC and would fit the terrain where I live perfectly.

I grabbed a builder’s kit and went to work around Christmas. So many things have changed in the last 12+ years in the RC world that I had to relearn literally everything that I knew. Slowly researching, I had to pick each part out after hours of combing through YouTube and forum posts.

Lessons Learned
#1 Don't over-tighten your wheels, #2 don't forget to set the gear mesh on your motor, and #3 don't forget to check your driveshaft phase.
I was playing around in the house and started to smell something getting hot (you know that smell before the magic smoke leaves.) I consulted the internet and quickly realized what I had done by checking the ability to spin the tires freely. They didn't budge. Yikes! After going back and fixing all my stupid mistakes it's much quieter and zooms around the house no problem.

This was my first builder's kit and first Axial truck. I must say i'm fairly impressed. The kit was a blast to build and piece together. I'm bummed about how tough it is to get into the electronics and fit batteries, but I suppose that's the price to pay. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this build goes.

I will continue to update this thread with trips, mods, and whatever else comes along.

Welcome back! You made a good choice on rigs and the electronics. Now paint it up! That always holds my builds up as well. Or maybe you don't care about paint because you're colorblind. :ror:

I'm convinced an SCX10 III will be coming out sooner rather than later so I'd hold off on buying one of those. That's just a guess though.

Yeah, I have no plans to paint it anytime soon. I do a lot of car detailing and own a vinyl cutter so i'll probably just end up wrapping the thing instead of painting it.

I just finished the build a few hours ago and I'm already impressed with this thing. I can't wait to get it out on the rocks!

Very cool! I'm jealous. I want a vinyl cutter of my own.

Yep, they are fun rigs!

Few safety items dropped via UPS today. I grabbed a charging bag and a storage bag for all my car and drone LiPo batteries.
These things scare the sh*t out of me. I suppose I'll get used to them over time.

I store my lipos in a 50cal ammo box "thumbsup"

I read somewhere they can turn into bombs when under pressure of a LiPo explosion so went with the softbag kit instead. Not sure if there is any truth to it or not. I assume, either way, the fumes are still very toxic, but at least my house wont burn down with my dogs in it while i'm at work. (Terrifying)

Got some new batteries in today. 2x GoldBat 3S 1500mAh. I'm shocked at the difference a 3S makes over a 2S. Very noticeable difference in initial hit. These fit this chassis much better, too, so I think they'll be my primary batteries. I ran the truck around for about 30 minutes tonight and saw almost no drop in voltage according to my DX5C remote so I'd say they'll give me plenty of crawl time in the real world.

Crawl session planned for Sunday afternoon.

I finally broke down and got that same soldering station. Money well spent IMO. Makes soldering almost fun.

When do we get pics of your capra in the wild?

Freaking night and day difference. Words cannot describe how properly fantastic this soldering station is. I also bought good solder, flux paste, and a hand helper guy.

Crawl day is Sunday 1/12!

That's a little fancier than the one I got many years back, but a soldering station makes a night and day difference.
