Cat Tree

I've been on vacation this week and was put to work building a Cat Tree. I've seen them in stores, but there is no way I'm paying $200+ for something made in China when I had 90% of it in my garage.

My cat is a natural climber. She loves to climb up stuff so I figured a Cat Tree in my girlfriend's studio would keep her off of my Man Mountain in the basement.

I bought a 2X4 for about $3 and got to work. The first thing was to get the 2X4 in place and secure. I did this by wedging it in place against the floor and ceiling with some all-thread and bolts. Then I got the first shelf into place. It will eventually be one of those half-pipe things with carpet.

Then I added a second shelf and a cat condo. My cat is too fat to fit into the condo part, but Lowe's only had 12" tubes.

Finally I added a third shelf for her to perch on. She hasn't ventured up there much yet, but she does check it out. Tonight we started wrapping it with sisel rope and will finish it with carpet.

It seems to make the cat happy and keeps her off of my mountain.

We found a kitten and I really wanted to build one but the wife found one for $60 at Cosco... left me more time for the real hobby

My sis built a cat run in the back room of her house. 1' wide carpet covered plywood about 18" from the ceiling along three sides of the room. One corner has a carpet covered pole so Mikey can climb up, and the other corner has a little house for him to hide in.

He loves it, though it took a few times for him to figure out he couldn't go hauling ass up the pole and brain himself on the ceiling once he got to the top. :lmao:

I made a free standing one out of 2-6' 2x4s (put together to make a 4x4), 3- 2'x2' sheets of 1/2" ply and a base of 2 pieces of 2'x2' 3/4" OSB. I notched a 1'x1' section out of the 3 pieces of 1/2" and staggered them up around the 2x4s with angle brackets. Covered it with carpet I ripped out from over the hardwood in my upstairs. I was going to use a quikcrete tube section, but I never added it in. I finally got rid of it 2 years ago, it had gotten so ingrained with cat hair after 8 years it was ridiculous. Not to mention my 1 cat had totally destroyed all the sisel off of half of it.
