Capra motor/ esc replacement questions

Good info here. Just got my cap from the last BF sale. been reading up looking at feedback.

I want to run my stock (older original rtr version) a bit to get a feel for it.
First upgrade is likely going to be the Vader flat skid and steering servo.
Then ESC/Motor. Was thinking the 1080WP and a HH/Tekin motor option to suit.
Most of my stuff ends up brushless, and was thinking of keeping one (This or the Bomber) brushed, and the bomber now has my hw XR8SCT/3600kv in it.
So that leaves keeping the Capra brushed, but it seems technology just needs to advance. lol

So now I'm leaning towards one of the new Fusion options from HW, likely the 1800 to keep some wheel speeds available.

At any rate, I'll keep reading so long as you all keep commenting. lol Winter here in Mi so I have time before I'll be outside playing.

I may do the same and try to install 9-10t pinion and theFusion SE.
OR go with what i consider better solution, the amazon 3 gear transmission.

11 tooth is the smallest pinion I was able to fit with any of the 3 motors that I’ve tried in mine and was just able to get decent gear mesh. Not sure how others have fit 9 or 10 tooth with the stock trans. Nonetheless, the 1800 Fusion with the 11 tooth pinion is money so far. If it didn’t please me I was going to go with the Amazon 3 gear w/dig.

From my understanding, 10t fits if you use different bolt heads -smaller.
9t fits if you dremel the grooves. Another option is the after market trans case.
but its more expensive than the 3 gear trans.

i would like to keep mine brushed if possible, though so many people are happy
with the fusion solution !

hows the heat on the fusion and 11t ?

I just picked up a RRP 11t but I'm still not sure if I want to go with a Trailmaster ( and what turn) or stay stock. I can't afford to go with a Fusion or any higher end motor and I know that if I don't spend the money, I won't be able to have the best performance but such is life.

I read back thru this thread several times about the Amazon transmission that y'all are mentioning and I've watched all videos posted here but failed to find it. So what transmission is this? Link? Also wondering what other parts or mods I might need to do if I swap to this transmission.

I put a vp 3 gear in my Capra (along with 10.2 f9 axles) and I ended up using the UC Fab flat skid for it. I had to cut a significant amount from the interior panel to clear the spur cover.

I believe there are adapters to bolt a 3 gear to the stock skid, but I don’t know what mods may be needed.

Really appreciate your input here, twade. Thanks very much. Looks like I'd have to get rid of some of the interior and do some other modifying but for a noticeable performance boost, may be worth it.

There is a new Fusion SE that cost $70. It may cheaper to go that route than 3 gear plus skid. Though i dont think anyone has one or installed one in a Capra.
You can wait and see how it works for people.
You can try your 11T first and see if you like it as is. I have 11t with CM20T. And it's fine. you can see in this video how that setup works:

Nothing wrong with it, but i would like to get the gearing even lower.

Thanks ( and edited... meant to say turn not tooth lol).

Maybe it's just me but that rear steer is mesmerizing to watch.

So from my understanding-

CM/ 3 slot- Good choice if mainly slow speed crawling.

TM/ 5 slot- If trailing and crawling. Start up and drag brake may suffer but motor and esc will stay cooler.

It’s the other way around, CM 5 slot for smooth start.
TM 3 slot for more torque and drag brake.

Yeah rear steer is great !

Exactly what I meant... really tough getting this old. Okay... looks like I'm up to speed, even if I can't relay a coherent thought lol. Thank you

Thanks also to King Dork. Link to that motor much appreciated.

It’s all confusing, specially with those motor names.
Fun though regardless to research all this.

I recently put in a Vanquish 3 gear transmission, 13t pinion and a HH Crawlmaster sport 13 T running on 3S. I have a HW 1080 esc...and I have about 15% overdrive. also have 4ws.

So after swapping to the Vanquish 3 gear transmission from (stock tranny that had a different motor and pinion) im noticing a bit more motor unloading(runaway) especially downhill ...not a huge deal but wondering if this is normal to a certain extent?

not an expert but trying some new stuff, i really like the low end control of the V3g tranny...any advice to eliminate the motor unloading based on my setup?

-thanks!

It sounds like you need to update your drag brake settings so that'll stop possibly.

I had the HH torque master 35T with the 9t pinion and replaced it with the fusion pro 13t pinion and love it. The low speed crawl is perfect and still has some punch. I would have used the 9t pinion but it wouldnt mesh.

1200kv Fusion SE with a 11t pinion on stock transmission and running 10.3 straight axles is buttery smooth and almost as fast as the stock electronics I gotta say I do like the RTR controller that allows you to limit your input 50/75/100. This capra is so much fun to drive ... Using WestDesertWheelers CMS.

So, if I want to run the Fusion Pro I need the Vader Skid and do I need the Treal aluminum Transmission case as well since I am running brushless?

I've been running Brushless (outrunner) with the stock trans case with no issues. Although is a super slow motor so I'm not exactly stress testing it.
