Best ESCs for your Micro-Trucks

The max voltage on my MOFO servo is 6v, so I have the adjustable BEC set to 6.1v. He also sells a servo that will use 7.4v. In my next SCX24 based build I will probably use the Reefs 99 micro servo that uses 6v minimum and 8.4v max. I will go to 8.4v because I will be using large tires and that extra torque will help.

Yes, the BEC is cheap so I don't expect perfect performance. On the one I'm currently using, I'll check the voltage output periodically to see if it remains stable. I'm sure that there is a better micro BEC option out there but it seems hard to find. If I find one the same size, but has better quality, I'll buy it and give it a try.

Right, you must check the voltage prior to use! When I first checked mine it was set to around 3v but yes, I think it could be set higher from the factory and, as you say, could be dangerous.

Also, something to be aware of is that these mini BEC's come with some defects. Among the ones that I received a few came with resistors that were either missing or broken as shown in the photo. I didn't even notice the defect until after I had applied power so do be careful.

It will stay in my Basher so far.

There are a ton of HV micro servos of this size, mainly for helis. Swash is torque, rail is speed - so the swash servos are those we are looking for.
I have a couple of those (I am a heli guy), even spare ones.

I bought the VOTIK 9497 some time ago especially to use it in micro trucks, it is sold also "for trucks", but in real it is the same style as the heli servos (with open side to cool the motor).
Did use it in my Capo Cub1, but then went back to a "normal" servo.

All those servos share size and form, and IMO they are not really appropriate for the SCX24.

I am happy with the digital Emax, (do also use small Savöx heli servos), no need to change for me, even if I have about 10 of those "heli servos" in my spare boxes.

- In reverse direction, and this is the biggest surprise for me, the Furitek Lizard is no upgrade to the stock SCX24 ESC, it is even a downgrade. The stock SCX24 ESC performs way better in reverse than the Furitek Lizard (but the Lizard is silent, the stock ESC not). The German AS12/15 and AS12/6 ESCs do have the same awesome driving performance they do have in forward direction also in reverse, no difference.

This is not true. I have the tegu, and yes, throttle response is too fast in reverse. In reverse, it hits high speed if you squeeze the throttle just a bit, it is not linear in the way you go forward, if it’s set to 100% reverse. BUT, you can choose “max reverse” and I have it set to 40%(you can change it from 30%-100%) which means it is as smooth in reverse as forward.

I was shocked to read that you consider the Lizard a downgrade from the stock ESC for reverse. I had not experienced that at all.
Then I realized that my experience is with brushless so Apples and Oranges.
But I AM curious if you changed the rather odd factory default throttle curve for something much better behaved. This is what I go with

I do not think this will be a fruitful discussion.

Yes, set throttle in reverse to 40% if you want - but then you do only have 40% of the power.
Or set your throttle curve, if you want...

But this does not change the facts.

The Furitek ESCs do have way less seperate "steps" in reverse, and ESC do have programmed steps. The Modellbau-Regler AS12/6 and AS12/15 do have 256 seperate steps, so about 128 (minus some steps for "dead zone" and some steps for "full power") in reverse, the new ASX24-Crawler does even have 1024 steps (512 in reverse).

"Normal" ESCs do have way (!!!) lower resolution.

So you can do what you want and program what you want, but the performance of a Furitek ESC with a brushed motor in reverse will NEVER be equal to that of a Modellbau-Regler.de ESC.
Same for forward direction, but in forward the difference is not that large.

There is no way out.


I do NOT say, that this does have a big effect in driving performance. Reverse is not that important, forward is only a bit noticable.

But facts are facts... no matter what you would "like to see/feel".

I am very interested to try out the ASX24-Crawler esc on the SCX24 that I will be putting together for the wife.

So far, my Tegu's will all be powering brushless, but none of them are up and running yet, so I cannot give my thoughts yet.

Honestly:
You won't feel a big difference to the Tegu with brushed motor during driving.

But: See my last posting ;-)

What I really like in the ASX24: It fits perfectly under the electronics-tray; perfect place to mount, even if you use stock-SCX24 electronics (V1 !!!).
