Another motor suggestion

Bare with me, I've been scouring the forums for a few weeks now trying to decide on a motor for my SCX10.3. I'm running brushless in my other 3 crawlers, so wanted to get a nicer HH brushed setup (plus my kit is running the Spektrum Firma 40A).


I've looked over the HH motor recommendations, but would like some feedback from the pros around here. I have an 11T pinion I can swap in if need be, and I'd like to give a 550 a go since it appears it'll fit. I'm not experienced enough to pick between 3 and 5 slot motors, so not really swayed one way or another on that. I'm looking at a Pro motor, something a step above the Sport line, but maybe not as expensive as the Experts etc.



Anyone running similar motors? What turn did you go with? I'm currently running the stock motor and have the 2 speed option working. It seems fine, so perhaps a Crawlmaster Pro in 12T, or a Torquemaster in 27T?


I have the excellent gearing calc in excell that someone posted, but I'm not sure if the values in the first column are for the stock setup, is the stock 35T motor equivalent to about 3300kv?


Apologies for the long-winded post, just want to get this figured out and get something ordered!
 
No problem you explained exactly what your looking for or to do. I'll give a more elaborate answer when I'm at home on my pc with my gearing excel sheet.

Short answer I'm running the crawlmaster sport 12t 550 5 slot in my scx10iii JLU and I love it. I am running the HW 1080 esc though. I switched to a 12t pinion for slower speed as I'm running 3s and no 2 speed yet. The stock 35t axial motor is no where near that high a kv rating and I've found against the same turn 540 torquemaster sport HH motors there is no comparison the HH is far better. I'm running the 27t 540 torquemaster in my gladiator with the stock pinion and have used the HW 1080 programming card to adjust the Firma esc just fine. I also have a 550 torquemaster sport 3 slot in 45t (1000 kv) I believe and it was just too slow for me. I also run the 8t 550 5 slot crawlmaster sport in my scx10ii with a 11t pinion as well and it's insane on 3s but with the HW 1080 esc adjusted it crawls well and has plenty of trail speed.

My opinion is that unless your running 2s the 2 speed trans is going to be way too fast unless you go with a higher turn motor. I'm running almost 9mph in first on my scx10ii with the 8t and about 8mph in the JLU. To me the 5 slot 550 crawlmaster sports are smooth and have tons of power especially on 3s.


Hope this helps some and I can give you more information based on the Excell spreadsheet tonight of you need it. If you have any specific questions I can swap some motors around and give you some feed back.

A recommendation if you want to go a different route, I'm running the Hobbywing 1800kv fusion in my 10.3 and it's awesome, super smooth down low and ton's of wheel speed when needed. It's super responsive and will go so slow and maintain that slow speed over obstacles without any more throttle input, at $149 it's awesome. Sorry to keep saying it's awesome but yeah I really like it!
 
If you want a Holmes Hobbies motor that's their specialty look at their 5 slot motors, they're intended to have a smoother start up. A 3 slot motor will have more torque but you wont be lacking torque with either when compared to the RTR motor.

Stick with the 550 size since you have the 2 speed.

I've considered this, but for me it was more of a cost thing. For the same price I can get a HW 1080 and basically 5 different motors to try, but I have been really tempted to get a FOC system to use but my fear is that I will like it and I'll want it in all of my crawlers and that's a Serious chunk of change lol........($150 times 7 kinda hurts thinking about it)

What is the stock SCX10.3 speeds? When punching 1400kv into the spreadsheet calc, it's showing 4/7 mph for 1st/2nd when using 14 tooth. Stock setup felt faster to me, but perhaps that's correct?



I liked the 550 Crawlmaster 12T suggestion, and may give that a go. If it's too slow with my 11 tooth pinion I can grab a 12 tooth to try.

Yes it's a bit pricey but compared to a MambaX and then buying a motor it's a good value, I have two MambaX escs and Yes they are great, but I like the Fusion quite a bit more, saves a ton of space and programming is so much easier with the card. That's the problem I'm having, I want one in all of mine now.

Are you running 2s Batteries?

Basically sounds about right 2s vs 3s the 3s is about 1.5 times faster.

The 12t is what I have and its about 1700kv
The 10t might be the better option at 1850kv this will be about 9% faster than the 12t
The 8t is 2300kv is about 35% faster than the 12t and about 24% faster than the 10t

I really wish they had a higher kv Fusion like a 2300kv to put in my Bomber that would probably get my money. I just dont think the 1800kv would be fast enough .........

Running nothing but 3S, don't even own a 2S lipo. I have a Crawlmaster Sport 12T 550 in my cart, figured I'd go the budget route and see how long it lasts. That said, 10T with the 11 tooth might be just fine too.

It's pretty fast but I agree I don't think it would be enough for a Bomber, it's close but not quite enough.

Yeah I love it, but that being said if you can swing it maybe get a couple different motors. I wouldn't go less than 12t. I really wish that I had gotten a 10t too I feel that with the lower pinion and the 10t would be the sweet spot. The 8t in the 10.2 kit trans is about 9 mph with a 11t pinion. It was also just a bit too fast in the 10.3.

Good point hadn't even thought about that. The 5 slot are basically 2xturns to equal the 3 slot turn count. That being said the 12t might be a bit too low and the 10t probably definitely too low. The HW 1080 can handle a lot lower turn rating (16t 3slot or 8t 5 slot at 3s) than the Firma.

Just looked up the Firma 40 ratings and your right I wouldn't try those then unless you are prepared to fry the esc.

You could do the 15t 550 5 slot 1450 kv should be fine it will be about 17% slower than the 12t.

Edit: I do have a Crawlmaster Sport 16T 540 sitting here, was going to use it in my Capra, but went brushless. Assume I could make that work for time being.

Stock gears based on excel spreadsheet is about 4.98 mph 1st and 7.27 mph in second for the 15t on 3s with stock 14t pinion vs 5.83 mph 1st and 8.52 mph 2nd 12t with 14t pinion.

I have both and I prefer the 1080 because of the adjustable bec 6v or 7.4v vs the 6v that the Firma 40 can do they deleted that option to adjust.


That being said I dont have an extra 1080 so I'm using the Firma 40 with a DX5 and a 27t 540 motor on 3s.
 
Also have the HH BR-XL in my wraith with a Tekin 35t pro hand wound that's pretty sweet too just not as easy to program on the fly like the 1080 but has way more features lol.
