I’m currently running a bone stock Gatekeeper RTR and have a case of upgrade fever. Would I gain any driveability by upgrading the stock Reedy esc to the HW 1080, or would I ultimately be better off throwing in something like the Fusion SE 2-in-1? And while we’re at it, what’s gained, if anything, by upgrading the RTR radio?

1080 G2 would be a nice upgrade with a bit more tuning options but you'd need an aftermarket transmitter to take advantage of the adjustable drag brake feature (nice for trailing). But I think it'd be more of an upgrade with the Fusion SE especially if you're gonna keep the stock radio setup.
 
I have a gatekeeper RTR
With the stock radio, the G2 added a bit more control, especially in reverse.
It did improve crawling control in both directions.
Adding a better radio, the adjustable braking (while not world changing) is indeed nice.
This is with the stock motor.
Next upgrade with be a Holmes Hobby 10T or 8T.
If I was to do it all again, I’d probably do the fusion.
But if you only have a little money to spend, the G2 is well worth it.
Not sure what the stock ESC allows, but the G2 allows up to 8.4v output.
This really helps with the steering servo.

NOTE: The G2 does not come with the programming card.
You could probably get one used for next to nothing, but a new one is pretty cheap as well.
 
Consider the Hobbywing Fusion SE. It is pretty affordable, to say the least, It saves a lot of interior space and works like a charm. Comes in 1400Kv and 1800kv. Afa I am concerned, the Fusion system is as precicely controllable as any brushed option, even 5-slots. Added bonus : High efficiency. It runs way cooler and longer for the same amout of Kv’s, with less rpm loss under load. And the FOC system is amazing. ( FOC = keep the throttle at a certain point, and FOC will keep the speed constant, whatever the incline, decline or obstacles. Weird experience, but one gets alltoo easily used to it, making any other ESC/motor combi feel clunky )
Oh, and even better. It can be set with the older firmware 2.0 programming cards. Functions printed on the sticker don’t correlate with the àctual Fusion settings but keep the manual of the fusion at hand and just go from there.
