Tower Hobbies No Coupons on Axial Kits

It just so happens I had the RR10 bomber kit in my cart the other day and went to order it the next day and got a notification saying coupon codes cannot be applied to Axial vehicles. So I sent an email off to towerhobbies and this is the response:

Thank you for contacting Tower Hobbies. I do apologize for any inconvenience/confusion in the matter, however it is not only Tower Hobbies that has been restricted from using coupon codes on Axial vehicles. On November 1, 2016, Axial notified us that they will no longer allow retailers, such as ourselves, to use coupon codes on their vehicles. This is similar to the Traxxas M.A.P policy that was enforced earlier this year. Again, we do apologize for any inconvenience in the matter. As the retailer, we are required to follow the rules of the manufacturer, if we want to continue carrying their merchandise. If there is anything further that we may assist you with, at this time, please let us know.

Needless to say, I went elsewhere.

I just like how their response seems to pretend like Tower and Axial aren't part of the same corporate umbrella.

Are we supposed to believe there would be any consequences to Tower for not complying with this stupid coupon rule? Is Axial going to stop sending product to Tower if they don't comply? I'm sure Great Planes would be thrilled if their biggest surface RC line isn't being sold by another one of their divisions who is the biggest online retailer.

People are siding with Tower's decision? That's funny. If you want to pay full price for Axial kits go right ahead. Move along.

Those of us that are long standing Tower customers and/or Super Saver Club members who have bought multiple Axial kits want the discounts back. I am a Super Saver Club member for the discounts on kits. I can easily get discounted parts elsewhere (eBay, RPP, etc). I've purchased vehicles because of the discounts. Plus, without discounts on Axial kits, I'm more likely to go to the competing brands.

Most LHS these days suck. I get better support and customer service from RPP, Tower, etc. I try not to support my LHS whenever possible because the prices are outrageous, they don't know an Axial Yeti from a Tamiya Frog, and there is no upkeep or racing at their track.

Bry,

I am guessing you are referring to the hobby store in Little Canada? I do not have this pleasure, My local hobby store carries 0 I mean 0 crawler stuff.. I was actually in the twin cities a few weeks ago and bought a KIT locally because they had it in stock..

My local hobby store has prices 10-20% higher then what normal prices are on tower, rpp, etc. Why would I pay extra if they have to order it?

If I had a local hobby store that would have the stuff I needed or was able to offer fair prices, I would do so!

Yes I work at the one in Little Canada, and the prices we sell at are the ones put out by Axial (Great Planes), and Vaterra (Horizon Hobby) and also Traxxas. When our prices are off from their listed pricing we see a big drop in sales.

To bad that your LHS is raising prices by that amount. We try to quickly address pricing changes as we catch them.

I was just out shopping for my Christmas present. An SCX10 II kit and noticed the no coupon policy. However, while on RPP hobby I was still able to apply their Nov coupon code to the scx10 II. I think that given Axials stance on applying coupons to their products that I will scrap my desire to get an SCX10 and just buy another Vaterra Ascender kit. I bought my 72 K10 as an RTR but I really was hoping to get a new kit for Christmas to tinker with while I'm off on vacation.

I just fired them off an email as well. Expressing my disappointment. Guess I'll buy the Ascender Kit and save even MORE money.

Edit: So, get their response and it's basically. Yes, that change was made about 2 weeks ago. Now we're just like Traxxas. Uhhhhhhhmmmmm. Do you REALLY want to draw those comparisons? Not that I hate Traxxas mind you. First truck was a Slash. I just don't comprehend their reasoning when an Ascender kit can be had for 289 after coupon. A full $60 less than the Axial kit.

Did they tell you they were following Traxxas?

One of my HobbyTown USA stores used to match online prices. I think they stopped that. But they both moved too far away - 45 minutes to an hour drive. On top of that the inventory and staff are a joke.

Being a long time member like most and looking forward to these discounts and that sucks was ready to put my order for the scx10 II and coupon doesn't apply but it will work for rc4wd trail finder II and with a cart full of parts and trail finder II @ 483.00 i save 78.00 because of this coupon....
Always wanted a trail finder II...
who know rc4wd might follow suit...shame on you Axial or Towers

well try the trail finder II with coupon and it works but i decided to try the 1/18 scale RC4WD 1/18 Gelande II Defender D90 4WD RTR and couple month ago they were shipping internallly and now it says it cannot ship internally but it can ship the 1/10 trail finder II...oh they will ship for 62.00.
Now that new or is it a way to buy direct from RC4WD with out using the coupon...

Yup. My local hobbytown will match tower and order anything I want. They started carrying VP, CI and pitbull last year.

My LHS will give the same price as Horizon and Great Planes. Also, they have a good staff, a scaler course and run events pretty regularly.

The first time I went there, I was looking to get back into RC via a short course truck. I changed my mind when I saw what "off road" racing was becoming (on road with jumps  ). I saw the Axial trucks and thought that looked pretty cool.

We used to have a fantastic offroad track and hobby shop back in the days before axial existed. Luckily the same guys still put on races and I'm told not a lot has changed with this area but I hear most of the racing now is pretty weak. I've thought about getting back into it.

wow, this blows..... so glad last week I decided to pull the trigger on a Yeti Score kit that I was dying to build. Got in at the last minute I suppose

I still haven't ruled out getting a SCT or buggy for "go fast bashing" stuff, but I warmed up to the idea of getting a crawler/scaler as you don't need as much open space to enjoy it.

How very interesting. I have seen products in the past where the supplier exercises a certain amount od price control over their products at the retail level.

I can not imagine this being beneficial to their business. Personally I was in the market for a bomber and a scx10 II over the Christmas season. Looks as though I will being going with an ascender, and looking for other toys. Good thing is that even though the restriction doesn't apply to parts, there is enough after market support that I don't need to purchase anything with their name on it again.

no matter where you spend your money, hobbico still gets a piece of it. I hate it, but.. it is what it is. try to get in close with your lhs and see if they can get you that employee discount or see if they have a rewards program like nankin hobby does.

im not trying to push anybody to shop at our online store, but im pretty sure our online store has the same rewards program. check it out and sign up if you wish.

so my question is, what changed? why are axial and traxxas not allowing coupons anymore? J.C. Penny was nearly ruined by CEO Ron Johnsons decision to end coupons.. My wife and I still dont shop there even after they brought them back. The coupons they use now are not the deals they used to be, so we shop elsewhere.

looks as if I will be getting more picky when it comes to what manufacturer I support from now on. I will say that I probably not buy any more RTR or Kits from anyone. I am just going to buy parts when I need them and most of those will be aftermarket parts from vendors on here and the local shops.

I would like to know from the person who implemented this asinine policy as to why they think this is needed. There are plenty of other ways to save a few bucks here and there...one is to cut the ridiculous salaries and bonuses for these CEO's...but I digress...
If everyone is shopping with coupons, then everyone is paying full price anyway. They can't just give away their profit margin, so the more people who use coupons, the higher the "retail" price needs to be to compensate. From the perspective of all customers' purchases combined, coupons are a zero-sum game. They only give the illusion to individual customers that they're getting a better deal.

That being said, I do love getting a $50 discount when I buy something expensive from Tower. It's a great marketing gimmick.

Regarding buying different brands in protest -- have you bought a Horizon product lately? (Losi, Vaterra, ECX, Spektrum) They already don't allow discounts, and their product prices are higher as a result -- $550 for a Ten-SCTE -- but there are noticeably fewer corners cut in the design and manufacturing of those products. My Baja Rey has gotten a couple "ooh shiny" upgrades, but I basically run it stock, and it holds up to punishment that most other brands would need upgrades to survive. I even kept the stock tires on that truck, something I haven't done in a long time.

Whenever my wife laments about expired coupons, I always remind her that they are an illusion of savings. A lot of times they are getting the consumer to spend money on something they weren't going to buy to begin with. Think about Tower's tiered coupon codes... How many of us are guilty of trying to add stuff to the cart to get to that next tier? Which means that the device is working as intended. More money is spent to "save" money. It's really a paradox.
