Ever since update to IOS11, my Iphone is becoming more Android like and now this. Can we go back to IOS10 and allow users (who paid or are paying for their phones) to chose how fast or slow they run?

What I Hate Most About Apple Slowing Down IPhones With Bad Batteries
What I hate most about Apple slowing down iPhones with bad batteries - news - att.net

A few days ago, an iPhone user discovered that his old iPhone felt slower because the battery was getting old. His empirical findings were later confirmed by a benchmark that seemed to back up that old iPhone conspiracy theory: Apple is indeed slowing down older iPhones just as new models launch. But that’s only a coincidence, caused by the battery’s aging. Then Apple came forward with the final confirmation that it’s been slowing down iPhones to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

Throttling iPhone speed on devices with old batteries is probably the right thing to do. But what I hate most about Apple’s decision to slow down iPhones with bad batteries is the way the company did it.

The lack of transparency here is very annoying. And Apple could have done a much better job informing users, and at least give them the impression they’re in charge of how the iPhone should behave. Apple practically lied to all of us by omission. Quietly throttling an iPhone, which is usually much faster than the best same-year Android rivals, is lying to the consumer. It’s also somewhat insulting, given that most smartphone buyers are adults who don’t need Apple to make decisions for them.

And we’re looking at three lies at least. One: That the iPhone performs great at all times, even when it ages. It’s this percent faster than the previous model when it comes to CPU performance and that percent faster when it comes to graphics. That’s what Apple tells us every year. It should also tell us that performance will drop once your battery degrades.

Two: That that the iPhone’s battery will deliver the same quoted battery life as the phone ages. Well, Apple does offer “up to X hours” estimates on its website, but I’m willing to bet most iPhone users wrongly expect their two-year iPhone to last just as long as it did when they first purchased it. It’s only in the fine print section that Apple warns users that battery issues are expected after a certain number of recharge cycles. That’s really not embracing the issue, and Apple could do better. And that fine print doesn’t mention CPU throttling whatsoever.

Three: That Apple doesn’t intentionally degrade iPhone experience. I’ve been defending Apple for a while on this one, but it turns out I’ve been also lying for at least a year.

I know it because it’s my business to know it: iPhones aren’t perfect. But no smartphone is. They’re tiny computers that require energy to offer us all the neat features we’ve come to take for granted. And batteries degrade in time. Not all people care about these details or even think about them. But most of them will be able to tell you right away if their iPhone feels slower all of a sudden, or if their battery performs worst than expected.

As for developers, shouldn’t they also be aware of the fact their resource-intensive apps may offer a poor experience on old devices?

Why wasn’t Apple ready to share with the world its new battery-and-performance policy when it introduced it last year? Why not inform users of what’s going on? Why not offer them the ability to choose between performance and battery life via a Settings option that would enable or disable CPU throttling? You know, like a more advanced battery saving mode?

This (#Throttlegate?) issue wouldn’t even be a problem for anyone. But Apple’s decision not to explain it to its customers before it was discovered is really annoying. I mean, did Apple seriously expect for it to go unnoticed?

In addition to providing more information about iPhone batteries and how they age, Apple could also offer customers ways for replacing faulty iPhone batteries after a few years of use. Yes, that means you’d have to pay more money to Apple for an old iPhone. But you could just as easily pay more money for an external battery to keep your iPhone charged at all times. But it would also mean Apple would go above and beyond what other smartphone makers do. Because all batteries age, no matter what device they power.

Instead, Apple chose to pretend the iPhone is perfect, by quietly slowing it down and hoping nobody will notice.

It's sucks having to wait 3 seconds instead of 2.

Ain't got time for that.

There are worse things, you could have a phone the bursts into flames.

It's apple, you deserve whatever your overlords decide you'll get.

I have an iPhone, but I could switch to an Android phone, not particular. I never understood the dumb ass pissing contest between the two platforms. If you like your phone, great, but don't really care. If you don't like my phone, great, don't buy one, and still don't care. It makes as much sense as the "tastes great, less filling" debate...

I’m not on my phone enough to really care, but it’s a huge dick move. Not everyone can or wants to buy the latest & greatest the minute it comes out. They shouldn’t intentionally be penalized for it...

I get almost a week use from a full charge.
And i could put another sim card in my phone so i just had 1 phone to carry around.

What i really look forward to is the day when i no longer have to carry the damn phone again, but as it is now family reasons i can not neglect force me to carry a phone.

The fruit company and google too really are evil companies, i am daily thinking about ditching all exposure i have to google, so that be my g mail youtube and so on.
The fruit company really never interested me, never liked them and that go way back to before they made their first phone.

And maybe i should get a regular Mobil phone to avoid being harvested.

I am sort of hoping for a massive solar flare to hit us that will knock out all COMS, just to see how many facetwitt junkies kill them self when they cant get their 15 minute fix for a couple of hours.

Lipo fire caused by a very specific scenario that apple had the same issue with right after with the iphone 8. It's a good thing you hate the dumb ass pissing contest enough to enter into it with the battery fire comment.

Sounds like you take your pissing contest personal...

Nope, wasn't digging at either platform with the battery fire comment, just a 'matter-of-fact" statement on the idea that things could be worse. Most makers of phones (IOS or Android based) have had their fair share. The Note 7 is just the one that is freshest in our minds.

It's Apple. They do shady stuff like this all the time. I don't know how they keep customers.

They decided it was time to obsolete all of your chargers and accessories when they decided the charging port wasn't good enough and they had to change it to the "Lightning" connector. And the iSheep bought into it! Why not switch to the universal micro USB like everybody else?

Now they admit they are purposely slowing down phones so you upgrade. They can claim it's for aging batteries all they want, but we know that's complete BS. Old batteries don't work slower. They just die faster.

I take nothing seriously  Both platforms suck in their own ways. Ya just need to figure out which area of suck works for you.

That’s a neat idea, but I’m not willing to miss a business call cause I have the wrong sim card in my phone, cause if I miss a call, them my customers will call someone else. Wait that came out wrong:lmao:, I run heavy equipment in my community, and during the winter season I make good coin maintaining the local roads."thumbsup"

I was told directly by an iPhone manufacturing employee long ago that the iPhone batteries aren't degrading, the issue is the updates choking the battery forcing users to the newer larger phones.
He said always spend the extra $$ and buy the biggest speed/storage phone available to compensate for their battery choking process for as long as possible.

I'm surprised that someone hasn't developed some sort of hack that allows a user to pick and choose when updates come up and which they want and don't want, and or to pick and choose what all operates on an iPhone at any given time.

I love my iPhone, but the longer time goes on, the more I feel a slave to their technology as I'm no where's near smart enough to bypass their doings.... even with an Apple employee insider in my pocket (so to speak).

Apple might sell less iPhones if people were allowed to control things on their own phone, BUT, they might actually sell more iPhones if people COULD control their own phones.

Oh you mean like you can on android? :flipoff:

You can root an iphone and take control of its functions, there are a million writeups online on how to do it.

You can Jailbreak an iPhone. You'd think they would have figured this out by now and provided a fix to the slowdown BS.

That's why I grew to love Android. With an iPhone you can have it anyway you like as long as it was approved by the Apple dictatorship. With Android if there's a will there's a way. That's why I've long called iOS "Android For Dummies".

What's pushing me away from Android is the forks in the operating system. Google provides one Android. Then the manufacturers dumb it down, install their own bloatware, and you never get updates.

It's apple, you deserve whatever your overlords decide you'll get.

Meh, this wasn't about us and them, thanks. "thumbsup"

Yes, and these days it's a $1000 bill in your pocket whether you paid up front or a little each month, ridiculous a phone should cost half that lol. :ror:"thumbsup"

Me too on the charge, got my settings all tweaked. Now that would be hilarious!!! :lmao::lmao::lmao:"thumbsup"

Unfortunately they all do shady crap.

Improve and move forward, unfortunately sometimes the inferior idea wins (VHS vs Beta) but now they are both obsolete. The current Apple lightning cable makes perfect sense and they don't break and/or get really loose like every Android I've ever had.

Correct about the battery aging. "thumbsup"

Yes they do and yes. "thumbsup"

I buy middle of the road at minimum to allow for this. Apple employees (even their experts) have been unable to fix disappearing Yahoo mail on friend's Ipad and Iphone lol. Yes would be great if we could control more of the settings, that's how I get great battery life, but it could be even better then. "thumbsup"

Meh, owned/supported many phones and Android is locked down even more in most stock configs, rooting is a pita and temporary. Many roots have their own problems or will certainly get them within months, then you gotta do a lot of reading and try another root file, been down that road many times. "thumbsup"

I was posting to help people and show how we're getting scammed by the companies selling us phones. "thumbsup"

Edit, forgot to mention the pure Google phones and Windows phones, they all got pros and cons. ;-)
