Water Proofing Electronics

not so much talk about sensored motors what the latest news on this one
would it be alright to leave them like that or you have to plasti dip(liquid electrical tape) outside around where the cable plug goes in the motor sensor plug.

or can water still damage the motor sensor from inside the can, and short the ESC too?
thats a good question, i know its ok on senserless, but i would say no on the sensored being that there is a board in it
 
so the board is on the outside of the can where the plug connect right?
and the inside of the motor have the sensor.
so that mean as long as you cover the outside sensor plug you should be okay?
 
I did the Radio Shack box ... differently...

ESC, BEC, RX & Winch controller are all in there. All wires end in eyelets and attach to the box inside and out (power in & out, steering servo and winch controller leads). Box is fully sealed with liquid electrical tape and I have had it fully submerged with no issues.

For the batteries, I just used liquid elec tape on the ends and it's been great.

do you have micro reciever n esc?or did youy use the 5" by 2" box
 
this is what i made last night,( i am a newb so this is my first attempt)

ok so i made this box to WP my CK, now i am not sure where to mount the battery and this box, i bought some industrial strength velcro straps(may be strong enough) i sealed the box and got everything except the esc and on/of switch packed with dielectric grease.

Q1: i put around the top of the on/off switch dielectric grease, and when i made it i siliconed it to the lid and screwed it on. is that enough?

Q2: where is the best place to mount the battery after removing the batt box? w/o an axle mount is the velcro enough?

can somebody post a picture of the rubber O-ring on the servo, think i know what your talking about just not 100% sure, ive liquid taped it just want to add the o-ring also... thanks
 
i just open the esc/receiver and fill it with high temp grease and reassemble in a way that it all "oozes" out. for my more valued esc's i use boxes. anything i would just throw in a lake like a mud bogger is gonna have traxxas esc... my crawlers have castle sidewinders(which are pretty dam water resistant as they are), and my scale trail runners have castle mamba max in a box with a fan.


the grease works great for recievers. i have NEVER had water trouble with anything.
 
I have used low temp hot glue to waterproof stuff a bunch of times. get a bunch of glue on a nice clean surface and use a smoothing tool, like a popisicle stick or something like it to smooth out the glue into a layer around the part and its holes/seams. then when you want to crack it open, it just peels away in chunks. kinda ugly, but effective. I've ran my clod under water no problems with this method.
 
Any negatives to using heatshrink tubing and siliconized glues or 3M type of elastomeric glue used on speaker cones?
 
Question to those who chose to install electronic into a container box of sort.

What ESC are you using and once it is shut close, won't there be? have you experienced? any heat related issues?

Also, do you just put condom, I mean ballon over the LiPo batty? (if your battery isn't water proof) ???

Is there? Will there be? any issues with LiPo battery being covered up tightly by a ballon ?


These two are the main things I would like to know.

"Plasi dip"

Ive used plastic dip found at lows or Home depot (used to make tool handles ruberized), I open the ESC and the Receiver case, dip the board into the dip and quickly put hem back into their case. I insert the RX cristal and install short Jconector cables to the channel (servo) outputs on the receiver so the connection is now external and can be sealed with dielectric grease.

The heat sinks fins can now be replaced on the ESC before the plasidip dryes. On the crawles I sometimes dont even replace the heatsinks, they are so under gerared they dont heat up!

I would just seal the plastic wrapping (shrink wrap) with silicone, or get some battery pack shrink wrap at the hobby store and then do the before mentioned. I have done this before too.

on regular Nimh I just take the wrapping off and use hot glue between cells for support. Water just washes through tham with no problem and dries out nicely with WD40 (AKA "Water disipating formula 40")
