I'm looking for some advice on what motor and esc combo is best for the VS410 Phoenix Portal.
The options i'm looking at right now are

Castle Creations Copperhead 10 Waterproof 1/10 Sensored Combo w/Slate (3800Kv)

Castle Creations Mamba X Waterproof Sensored Brushless Combo w/3800kV Slate

Hobbywing Xerun AXE Plus R3 Sensored Brushless Combo w/540L R2 Motor (2800kV)

Hobbywing QuicRun Fusion Pro FOC 2-in-1 ESC & Motor System (2300Kv)

Any other suggestions would be appreciated

3800kv for a crawler is really high, I wouldn't go higher than 3000kv. I've got a Copperhead 2800kv in my SCX3 and it feels like I'd probably break something if I went any higher. The Copperhead has been a good system so far though, would recommend. My only complaint is the fact that it doesn't come programmed with a drag brake, so you'd have to buy a programmer for it (and of course it's not exactly cheap because Castle. I think they're like $50-$60, somewhere around there). I have heard great things about Hobbywing though, that'd probably be your safest bet.

I've got a Mamba X with a 3500kv Puller Pro in my Ultra. And a Copperhead with a 3500kv Puller Pro in my Phoenix. Volt up and gear down! I typically use a 1300mah 4S.

I have all those ESCs but my Castles have different motors. My Copperhead has a 2700kv Puller Pro stubby and the X has a 3100kv Roc 412. 2200-2800kv is where I usually like to be on a crawler. 3800 is a bit much, but wheel speed can be fun.

The Fusion Pro is hard to beat, especially when you figure price into it. Clean wiring, easy install, excellent performance. It will obviously be slower than the rest on your list due to lower kv. If you want more wheel speed, my choice would be the Axe. The ESC is a big boy and its heavy. Performance wise though, it is great. The 2800 version is the biggest motor you can get on the transmission. It's also heavy. Either of those Hobbywing setups will require you to grind some of the passenger side upper link mount off the skid. No big deal, its plastic and only takes a minute.

The Copperhead is the newer of the two Castle ESCs. Its a bit lighter than the X and doesnt have the aux wire function. Even though I have drag brake set to full on on both ESCs, it is not as good as the Hobbywing. It will creep down hill instead of staying stopped. I also am not happy with the descent control compared to Hobbywing. When going down hill, the HW will only go as fast as your throttle is set, where the Castle will go faster. It seems as Castle is not even trying to compete in the crawler world anymore.
