Velenion cogging?

Hi, I'm new to this forum and new-ish to crawling, and hoping that I could get some input without being bashed. I have a velenion vxl3s in my wraith (I know it's not the ideal esc for crawling) but I put in a 17.5 sensored trinity motor to help with the cogging, and while it does seem better it's still there. All my connections are good and both the esc and motor are relatively new so they should be working correctly. Could it just be that the motor is at fault? I know it's a cheap motor, that's why I got it. Would a better quality motor help? I really want to keep the velenion because it just fits so nicely lol. I could go back to brushed but I want to avoid it...

I tried a 21.5T sensored bl motor on 2s and it cogged. Was progressively worse when I tried a 3s and then 4s. Apparently the only way to get a bl motor to not cog is to spend $200 on it. Gonna stick with brushed for now.

Is the vxl3 a sensored esc?
Maybe you need to switch it to sensor...

A lower gear ratio will help some.

It's non-sensored. I have a few of them in my Traxxas bash trucks. They work great for bashing but not so good for slow speed stuff. Either get a sensored brushless system or go brushed.

It IS sensored lol. I have the sensor wire from the motor to the esc. I might be new but I'm not stupid lol.plus I mean it says it right on the box.....

And I'm running a 17 pinion to an 80 tooth spur. What would you recommend ?

I tried your system in my wraith with 90/14 (spur/pinion) and 43/13's in the diffs and still cogged.

Make sure the sensor plug is fully seated into the esc. It goes quite a ways in there.

Any sensored motor shouldn't cog at low throttle input, even the cheap chinese junk.

I've tried 4 sensored motors of varying turn/kv at different voltages and they ALL cogged even with super low gearing.

Tried cleaning the port/further seating the connector? Another esc?

I ran a few different motors off my old vxl3s including a novak 17.5 and a tekin 13.5, the sensored stuff was smooth and as expected the sensorless stuff cogged badly. The vxl would be a perfect esc if it had drag break...

The VXL ESC is a two pole system and poorly supports a 4pole motor. Half the advertised rpm, clogging, dead spots, general poor performance. If you want to run the VXL, use the VXL 3500 motor and go fast.

I ran a castle 1415 on the vxl3s without issue. With the normal sensorless cogging of course.
