Vanquish VXT-2

True, it's a tiny difference. I could be off base. In tiny trucks however we do talk tiny differences. I don't personally have any high traction slab rock near me like they have in Utah but I could imagine guys out there might happily gain some mm on their cog when they are attempting to slip out of some of their steeper side-hill lines. I am just considering why a guy like Logan might praise a 5" tire for a video but not actually run it when the camera is off. I speak in reference to an earlier comment

He said he likes G8 Krawlers the best and the set he slapped on the VRD after that video is worn in very well. Looks like he swaps them around to different trucks.

I've seen at least one other channel be pretty positive on the VXT2s but then not run them after the review (TRD Adventures?). Exocaged mentioned at least swapping out the foams for something else, but it looked like they were hooking up pretty good in his videos.

I think some of us are stuck in our ways while others just cant stop messing with stuff.

I mean, we are talking 1/8" (~3mm) it's going to potentially raise the car vs a true 4.75 tire. I can't imagine that would be enough to unsettle your rig.

The compound is also super sticky. If you are on the fence, I still think they are worth a try.

It's not necessarily that simple. It could be 1/8", a little less or it could be more. But it can definitely make a difference. Plus the dynamics of the tire change as it gets taller.

Also the larger size can allow the tire to float over holes that might swallow a smaller tire or prevent them from getting stuck on some undercuts. There are other advantages other than ground clearance.

Personally i notice capability differences in tires with small size disparities. Both in width and overall diameter. Sometimes I think it might be in my head but I definitely roll into more challenging lines having a feel for exactly how much axle clearance and contact patch I am working with. So yeah, for sure familiarity. I genrally prefer the size of the Proline XL tires and the JConcepts tires I have tried.

All said obviously the insert will always matter. All things being equal on the insert tuning however, I have definitely developed a significant comfort in the 4.75" tire over the years.

I do really like the tread pattern on the 5" VP. To me it's much better than their Falken or now Yokhama tread pattern. I will definitely give them a go one of these days

Just listening to his Stance rtr review while I'm working this morning. At the 12min mark he stated that the tires have a very soft compound and wears quickly on the highly abrasive rock he drives on. Seems reasonable to not run them if your surface doesn't require the extra sticky tire to get traction.

Speaking of VXT-2's ...... I had some Work to do at the City Hall of Newport Beach very close to CDM (Corona Del Mar Beach) Beautiful place to crawl on some really nice rocks with sand and varying surfaces and was able to squeeze an hour session in the morning with some chilly sunny beautiful weather.

As usual my 3 link Capra on ar45's straights came along with me to go test it out the VXT-2s. The last set of tires the Capra had were some 4.75 Vaterra TSL Super Swamppers I found at my LHS ... they are good and hooked great even at CDM I have tried them at the same location with same car and set up before.

However I wanted to go a bit taller without going 2.2 at the time I was contemplating with a Cut&Shut but I thought of given the VXT-2 a try since its pretty slim in width (compared to 2.2's available) and obviously taller at 5" compared to the 4.75 vaterras.

As mentioned on the thread there is always pros and cons for almost everything... and even though they give you the edge on height I did noticed my capra became a bit too light on the front as it climbed not much but it certainly would benefit from some weighted knuckles ... so far Its only got ssd diff brass covers on it. Even with that I was able to do everything the vaterras did and more I was able to get some pretty good lines with them but they are soft and fold over with traction, I guess you can see they will wear out quick but they will just get better.

I guess the veredict for me is that if you are looking for a taller tire without the width of the 2.2's and easier and cheaper than a cut&shut these are for you GET THEM ... we know that they perform great and wear nicely. I could not imagine complaining about the wear of a tire when we spend 500+ on these toy trucks and all of the hop ups we do. :lmao:

I cant weight to try some dual stage foams or printed inserts on them and maybe get the knuckles for the ar45's and get back to CDM to test.

Here is a couple pics of the adventure at the Pirates cove @ Corona Del Mar... if you ever in socal or are local and never visited it is well worth the time to come and check it out  ... probably lots of crawlers on the weekend.

Great photos! You left coast guys definitely have the rock advantage plus you get to watch those California girls while crawling. :lmao:

You mention "veterras" a couple of times. What are those? I am kind of assumpting that's an auto-incorrect helping confuse things.

Thank you we are definitely spoiled here with many terrains to choose from and there is quite of topography here (not a lot of flats in here at least where i am) problem here in SoCal is the amount of people (traffic) that adds to travel time. CDM is a fancy area, prime real state that likely the cheapest property will certainly be above the 1.5 to 2 million ... im sure there is a lot of eye candy around but nowadays you can even look or admire without someone thinking that you are some sort of perv so I stick to my crawl and move on. :flipoff: Plus i like to beat the crowds and go there on off peak hours. As you can see in the pictures the beach was actually empty at 930 am.

As for vaterra... I know you had some of their offerings ... I have read your threads ... I found these TSL's at one of my LHS for a ridiculous price ... 11$ a set and they have been one of my best performers. Said LHS still had some of their Bronco bodys around at the time.

I've never crawled there but I did get some tail on one of those lifeguard towers when I was a kid

Never too late to come down from the high desert although I am sure you are not hurting for rocks in your neck of the weeds :lmao: .... 8) and I would imagine those were some good times back in the day. "thumbsup"

One of the big crawl spots in Las Vegas is Calico Basin. Its right outside Red Rock Canyon. Its a popular spot to go rock climbing or hiking. Lots of eye candy there walking around.

I've been interested in testing out a set in our rocks. Usually I run test tires quite a bit, maybe around 30 battery packs over as many as 20 crawls or so. Some tests see multiple states and up to three trucks for testing the same tire. I don't make any money on my content, so I'm not driven to keep posting videos for YouTube cash flow. I also don't sell anything. Ergo, I'm in no rush and can take time evaluating tires.

Yes, in the Vegas area we have excellent rock. Calico is nice, but a bunny hill of sorts. There are far superior areas to crawl if you're willing to drive a bit. Valley of Fire is 45 minutes away, and it's stunning.

Here's a link about a tire review, and you'll see some of the better rock in our area.

Ohhh Vaterra! Yes, I loved the Ascender in its day. Those tires looked great and were the perfect size too. Just the compound wasn't up to modern standards.

I always find it crazy when I hear people talk about wearing out their crawler tires, or iv heard they dry crack. At best some of my tires have the leading edges of the tread blocks have a slight curve. I have a set of rc4wd trail stompers from my original scx10... no cracks. Nothing that aggressive here in Michigan I guess. I was wondering about the size of those tires because it was always hinted by Matt in the live streams that they aren't what's on the side wall. Anyone try the ones that are supposed to be 4.65? Are they bigger?

I’ve always wondered the same. How long does it take wear out Proline Predator or even G8? For me it would take years, but I did have a wheel and tire problem so I have plenty of options in the rotation.

I like the 4.65” Falken Wildpeak M/T tires. I am not sure if they measure larger though, but I think they are a good size.

The vxt2’s measure 5” tall. The falken mt’s are right at the 4.65” mark. I’m curious to see what the new Yokohama 4.75’s measure out to.

Here’s a vxt2 next to a 4.75” JConcepts landmine

What insert do you have in the VXT? Love the tread, not so sure about the overall shape

Fresh VP dual stage 4.75. Once they break in I expect a little more square profile

We wear tire out on our rocks, especially on the steep and technical climbs. The sandstone can have ribbons of rubber peeling away from the the tire on a single trail run. We don't do the 5000 rpm climbing; slow and methodical is our approach, but when things get steep, the tires really suffer.

Sandstone does put noticeable wear on tires, especially if you have a lot of underdrive/overdrive. I've never worn a set out though. Usually swap them out to something else before then. One set of my Tusks is probably ~1/2 tread and they have quite a bit of run time on them. At the moment, those are my favorite tires unless its wet.

For a while, we had big groups going out there every Sunday (Calico). I always took my crawlers to Logandale with me when we'd camp and Jeep. Only took them out to Valley of Fire once. I like crawling with a group and nobody seemed to want to go out there. I lived in Henderson so Calico was not much closer to me.
