Just bought a used TRX6. All stock.

Looking at options for brushless and reckon it looks a bit like this:

1. Castle Mamba X 1410 3800kV - Probably a bit fast
2. Castle Mamba X 1406 2850kV - Probably about right speed wise but is the 1406 motor big enough for the TRX6?
3. HW AXE550 3300kV R2 - This seems to get a bit of love but still looks a bit fast for me. I also had this combo in my Wendigo and then my Wraith and did not get on with it at all. TBF though, my Wendigo is not geared as a crawler and the Wraith might just have been too light. Either way sold the motor on.
4. HW AXE540 2800kV R2 - Speed probably 'about right' but, again, is the 540 motor large enough?
5. HW AXE550 2700kV R1 - I have this in my Enduro Sendero, maybe I could transplant it over to the TRX6 and get a 540 motor for the Sendero...

Keen to hear other people's experiences.

Thanks.

If your 6 is ~stock weight, I think a hobbywing 540 should be enough. I've got a 2800 540 R2 (iirc) in my straight axle 4. It's both much faster and much slower than the HH 540 puller pro it used to have. It also runs much quieter than the HH. The only time the ESC makes any noise is under heavy load.
It wouldn't hurt to put a larger 550 in to help carry the extra truck around but I don't know that it'd be necessary.
I haven't used the HW550 but if it's like the HH550 in my heavyweight 6(~12.5-13 pounds) it'll have a 5mm shaft and can only be geared down to an 11t pinion (as far as gears I would actually trust not to explode) but the speed ended up right where I want it.

Helpful thanks!

Bit the bullet and bought an AXE540 2800kV.

Other people's milaege may vary but I find the HW AXE stuff great for crawling and the Castle stuff better for rock racing. I don't think I could see the TRX6 as a rock racer :)

Only question remaining:

Do I install the AXE540 2800kV in the TRX6 or fit it in my Sendero and swap the older AXE550 2700kV into the TRX6?

I'm thinking the AXE550 might make more sense in the TRX6.

I put the AXE540 2800kv in my '21 Bronco and it seems to have plenty of power. However, I don't have the TRX6, so I'm not sure how much heavier it is. If you're just planning on rock crawling, I think the 540 should be enough, but you may feel different. Only way to know is run both setups and see which you like better.

Hey Man I just purchased the new Spektrum RC Firma Crawler Sensored Brushless Smart ESC & Motor Combo 2100kv and ill let you know how that handles it seems pretty versatile for my Gspeed project but would work well on the TRX4 and TRX6 the only thing I could see as a problem would bee the sensor cable is a little short and not sure where you want to install your esc? But check it out and ill keep you posted and hope the Hobby Wing Axe works for you they are great ESC's and Motor's..... BUZZZZZZ.....

Out of your choices I’d go with the mamba x 1406 2850 or the 1406 3800 instead of the 1410.

The 1406 series is made for crawlers. Castle breaks down motor # descriptions on their website.

I’d then gear it down to 9-10t pinion for nice slow crawling in 1st gear and it’ll be plenty fast in 2nd. Using 3s lipos will also make up for any loss of wheel speed caused by gearing down.

Beauty of the Mamba x is you can use any other motor with it. Brushed, brushless or out runner. Plus the tuning abilities using castle
Link and a PC are awesome.

You are not trapped by a proprietary sensor cable like the HW Axe system.

That’s just my .02.

Ta for all the input.in the end I went for a 2800kV AXE540. However, I’m going to use the AXE540 in my element ennduro sendero and have swapped the AXE550 2700kV from that truck into the TRX6 with its included 12T pinion.

I’ve current got Covid so am limited to testing it in the back garden but I’d say it’s a pretty reasonable compromise between speed/power/crawling. Certainly, I lack the reflexes needed to drive it any faster :)

I have to say, having done a bit of work on it now that the quality of this truck is really good. So little steering slop compared to my Sendero for example. Can’t wait to be able to get it out on the trails.
