Tire choices... There are quite a few when you start looking around.

So whats the best?
Why is one better then the other?
What should we be looking for in a front tire? What about a rear tire?

That is about all I have found so far, I didn't list anything bigger then a 3.2" rim since most projects wont use anything bigger then 2.2 size rims.

Graet post. I was just perusing all the choices online as well. It'd be graet if we could get more specs on each tire, especially the height. Most of them seem too short IMO.

Panther's website is all jacked up, but they did list the Cobra as a sand/snow tire.

But this guys's mashers look like the hot ticket.

My opinion about the HPI sandthrowers .

It is a good tire but . The profile is just a bit to short . ( in loose sand )
On harder sand its a good tire, with brushless motor it pulls auto wheelie's .
Its a hell when you want to reverse ,, no grip at all ( because the profile is in a angle ).

correct me if im wrong. ( maybe i got the Europe version ) .

From seeing the real deal, the Unlimited class sometimes use a split paddle, very much like the Proline Sandpaw for a steer tyre and a bucket like the RC4WD Intimidator for the rear or all the way around, as per example.

The tyres are basically drag slicks with the paddles vulcanised on by
specialists.

The Modified class trucks are restricted to off the shelf rubber, the bulk using Sand Tires Unlimited's paddle, the one the Tamiya tyre is a replica of.

IMO Ty, the Sand Paws worked awsome as long as it was loose sand or gravel but the truth of the matter is that it's not allway loose as I found out. I think were going to have to find a good hard surface tire to run allso. Some sort of pin spike or badland like tire will be a must have in the arsonal as well, so dont spend all your time on just paddles;-)"thumbsup"

According to what I have read/heard the Panther paddle is the best off the shelf paddle for 2.2 wheels. The rubber compound is a lot softer then the Sand Paws, and the tire is a little bigger in diameter. I am going to buy another pair for the front axle of my rig, and see how they compare to running the Sand Paws out front. "thumbsup"

Let me start by saying I have yet to try the rc4wd paddles yet but have ran all the other 2.2s listed and a couple custom ones. The panther paddles seem to work best for what I like to do and the terrain I run on like dry sand, decomposed granite and loose dirt. The wheel you mount them on and foam makes a decent difference in them as well. I tried no foam in a couple sets and hated them both and went back to foams. Width of the wheel kind of lets you tune the cup shape also. I have my fronts setup narrow and tall to bite harder and more than the rear, that way i get less wheelie overs and seem to drag the rear up stuff as opposed to the rears hitting a lip and flipping you backward. I'm stoked there is a place for these beasts to go now and others are taking interest"thumbsup"

No, I don't think so.

You want stiff paddles that won't flop over for maximum bite.

ive wanted to finish that car so bad, right now everything is in a box waiting to be built..


im thinking that maybe just running the paws up front may be better, from watching brads (bender) vid it seems to "power slide" better with one paddle forming a straight surface to skim across.. rather than the broken up paddle of the sand paw... that might be more likely to catch.

Losi made a set of those for the 420 series wheels and they where excellent. I've yet to see anyone do it for 2.2 size tires, though, and with the Slash 4x4 and the FOff builds, you think there would be a good market for them.

I had them on my LST2 (R.I.P.) for snow and sand use.

I would assume so. Most 2.2 buggy and truck beads are similar to beads on a typical crawler wheel. Bender has the pathers mounted on axial bealocks.

I hope so....I just ordered 4 Panthers myself. I had a new set of RC4WD steel rims sitting around so I thought, why not?

I think the RC4WD rims will be too narrow, but I had planned on machining new centers for them eventually. Once the Panthers show up, I'll have a better idea on what width I want to run.

Good luck with teh steelies. Everytime I think of buying them i remember the note on how hard those rims are to mount. Maybe you should chamfer the rim's bead a little to facilitate mounting them up.
