Thinking about doing a leaf spring build.

I'm thinking about doing a leaf spring build. I know RC4wd has spring kits... Who else has them? And how do you guys like them.

Not sure who else makes them for the scx10 but my buddy did leafs on his old scaler and it absolutely killed the performance. Not sure if it was just the kit he used (can't remember which one) or if it was how he mounted them. But it definitely was worse on the trails.

I have an SCX10 that is my trail runner. I just want a very realistic scaler. I would like it to have decent performance if possible, but I'd go for looks over function on this one.

the scx-10 chassis frame rails are not inline
with the axle's preferred leaf spring mounting holes.

so the rc4wd kit has to mount to the outer side of the
scx-10's frame rails.
works... but not really the look I'd be after.

Instead...
I'd keep the scx-10 for trail runs and general operations...
then purchase a rc4wd TF2 chassis as my leaf sprung, scale rig.

^ Don't worry... you'll get to spend some of yer money,
when ya mod the TF2 chassis/susp. exactly to your liking. Lol

IMO... the TF2 makes for a great start
when considering a leaf sprung rig.

the sawback is an excellent option too. decent crawling performance for a trail tuck, id say its almost equal with my scx'es. it needs a few tweaks out of the box but id say im happier with it than my tf2, although, the 2 speed in the tf is cool

I like that chassis as well.

because I'm not a huge fan for jeep bodied rigs

I bought GCM 4Ten chassis kit that uses Tamiya or RC4WD leaf springs and SCX10 axles, but changed them out to RC4WD first generation Toyota axles with leaf springs for more of a scale look and really love my leafed spring-ed r/c.

I'll have to look into these other chassis. I have a spare scx-10 frame lying around. So the plan was to build that up. I also have spare axles, and lots of small parts for the scx. I'm going to have to look at the other ones.

With an scx10 chassis you just need to take the taper out of the rear or front of the frame and screw the leafs into the upper holes on the axial axles.
With this the leafs mount outside the chassis rails and seems to be fine so far.
I'm still building vs driving....

the leafs will probably kill your performance but if your looking for scaliness thats not really a problem. i think i saw an scx10 with a tf2 leaf spring set up, but i don't really remember much about it.

I own two SXC10's that I four linked and put the servo's back on the axles, and wanted a R/C with leaf springs, but wasn't going to pay $400 plus for a TF2, I found my kit on E-bay. I got my GCM 4Ten chassis for less than half price, it went from Canada to a guy in Italy then to me in the U.S.A. It been half around the world before I started building it.

yeah i was thinking about a leaf sprung yj for my next build but i couldn't decide on what chassis.

I am too looking at setting up a rear leaf setup. Feel like if setup right it could add a lot of performance on the trail, helps keep the rig from unloading so much. Picked up the rc4wd kit along with there red (soft) springs from someone at a comp. After looking at them I was worried about smashing them and bending them (already planned on a traction bar) so I kinda threw it on the back burner. Then I saw someone on face book with a rear leaf sprung SCX10. It looked great. Messaged him and he recommended the Delrin leafs, you can fold them over and they will spring back. Here is a pic I stole from him. Maybe he is on here???

I did rear leafs in my scratch build bronco. I did have a problem with them bending some on a bounce then the truck wouldn't sit level. Very irritating to me. My fix was running rc4wd scale shocks next to the leafs with internal springs. Now they just look like dampeners when in fact they hold most of the weight. That helped out big time and still looks pretty scale.

I am using the RC4wd leafs for now on my not finished CJ-7 rig i'm building... I was also thinking of switching to delrin leafs but will see how it handles first then move on from there.
