Tamiya 1/12 Toyota Land Cruiser 40 pick-up (GF-01 Chassis) with a few mods.

Bought one of these recently and have just finished it and given it it's first run this afternoon. Please note that it's not completely stock as I've changed the motor and ESC and fitted proper shocks not to mention the Wild Willy 2 wheels and tyres.

Ran it for a half hour non stop mainly in the heavy grass in the back yard and couldn't be more pleased with it. Impressed with the chassis, very stable and handles really well and has a nice tight turning circle. Ideal for tight spaces. Yes it wheelies easily on hard surfaces, but is very controllable. Runs nice and straight. In the heavy grass while it would start to wheelie easily the little wheel at the back would catch in the grass and bring it back down right away. Corners flat out without tipping over, just drifts a bit wide. Running over something just half an inch high (edge of patio etc.) will get it a foot or more in the air but it lands flat nearly every time. Heaven knows what it would do over a ramp.

The 25t Torque Tuned motor the kit comes with isn't bad, but I decided to use an Etronix 27t Sport Tuned motor. A bit faster but still a fairly mild torquey motor and it is rebuildable. Also replaced the aluminium pinion with a steel one. Proper bearings fitted all-round of course. Very surprised at how much quieter it runs with the Etronix motor. Can't hear the motor and gearbox at all when the truck is running around. Makes a nice change from certain RC's I could mention.

Didn't care for the wheels and tyres that came with the kit, they just didn't look right and the rubber wasn't that soft. Sold them on eBay and picked up a set of Wild Willy 2 wheels and tyres for about the same price. They just seem to go better with the kit. Don't know why Tamiya didn't use them in the first place.

The stock friction shocks are 65mm. I had a set of Absima 62mm ones so I fitted them as they were close enough in length. They control the Wild Willy tyres really well. Did the drop test and the tyres didn't bounce at all. Fitting proper shocks is essential with this kit. You could fit 75mm shocks if you wanted as there is enough suspension travel but the angle of the drive-shafts is extreme and the increased height would make the truck less stable.

Before painting the body I looked around at pics of 1:1 Land Cruiser pickups and have copied the colour scheme of one I liked. Surprisingly a lot of the 1:1 pickups have body colour roofs and not white ones so I decided to go that way as it makes it a bit different. Also the rear wheel arches are body coloured not black as recommended in the kit. Also didn't use the black decal strips that fit between cab and the bed as it just looked awkward and overdone.

Finally replaced the hard plastic "wheelie wheel" at the back with a rubber one obtained from a model robot shop. Found when I had a Midnight Pumpkin that this change made it run straighter when wheelieing.

One reason I really like the 4WD GF-01 chassis compared to the Lunchbox / Midnight Pumpkin is it's ability to get through thick grass or soft surfaces that would bog down the LB / Pumpkin. Also handles soooooo much better. Wonder if Tamiya will do a longer wheelbase GF-01 Lunchbox. Now that would be popular.

Think this is going to be my all time favourite back yard basher it's just simply so much fun.

This truck is so quirky, and so Tamiya, I have to have one! Oh, and 4wd? I'm going to use it as a stream bed basher.

Hey John (in Derby), Great job on that new fj40 pickup! With your fantastic photography and building skills, the truck looks real nice! and thanks for the added insight on your upgrades. I just came across this model online during my search for a new rc for my son. It looked good and the price was right (esp for being a Tamiya kit). I'm intrigued by the new gearbox and layout. Without your experience relating to it's stability, it was hard for me to judge how top-heavy this might be. I guess it really does land on it's wheels easily (just as a few youtube videos suggest).
1. How does Wild Willy mount to this body? It's just the half torso version of this driver right?
2. Since you installed bearings, did this kit come with only bushings? If so, do you have a parts list of sizes so folks like me can order them in advance?
Thanks, your assistance is much appreciated! Tom

Oh nevermind #2.
HA, I found my answer at Tower with its list of bearing sizes. (pretty much all 5x11, except for the steering).

Hi Tom

Thanks for you kind comments.

I was just thinking myself that this would be a great RC for a child. You can really throw it around and yet it's still easy to control and it doesn't need much doing to it. Just proper shocks and the bearings of course. I think there will soon be a lot stock tires & wheels from this kit showing up on eBay as everyone I know who is considering this kit and has seen mine wants to get rid of the stock ones and go for the Wild Willy 2 ones. BTW I sold the stock wheels & tires on eBay and picked up two sets of the Wild Willy 2 rears for about the same price so basically a zero cost upgrade.

I'm using the Absima 62mm shocks which seem really well suited to the truck just as they come. Tried a set of "eBay" adjustable alloy shocks, the ones with the progressive rate springs which can be recognised by having the coils very close together on the upper part of the spring. They weren't a success as the truck tended to bounce around a lot. The Absima's, though fairly stiff, give a nice smooth controlled ride.

I'm going to be trying an Etronix 21T tuned motor in the next day or two to see how well it handles a bit more speed. To start with though the stock 540 torque tuned motor isn't at all bad. Just wish it was rebuildable. Due to the way the motor is mounted you can remove the motor by simply undoing the two motor retaining screws. No other disassembly needed so it's quick and easy to change motors. I have just fitted cooling fins to the motor. Used a standard low profile unit off eBay and only had to trim a bit off two of the fins to allow it to fit right up to the chassis.

Here's a photo of the truck with the big front bumper fitted (included in kit). Certainly adds a lot of protection, but sticks out a lot and is unsightly to say the least. I'll be putting the small bumper back on shortly.

Yes the driver is the torso version and is on a mounting plate that fastens onto the body with servo tape. I'm going to put some self adhesive vinyl over where the mounting plate is stuck onto the body to make it more secure. Overall it's a real easy and quick build
