Suggestions on building a pre-runner? (And a Slash)

Hey guys,

I currently own a slash with a 5.5 strapped in it. After spending countless hours fixing it from everytime i take it out, it just keeps breaking, traxxas parts are pretty hard to find here in Australia, so I've decided I'm going to rebuild it back to a standard slash and race it.

I have plans on building a pre-runner (Atleast that's what I think they, you know, IFS and solid rear?) but not sure where to start. I've read over some threads, namely the trophy truck thread below somewhere.

I looked at them properly, just seeing what seems to be involved and if I could do it, what it seems is it is just a buggy with a modded rear end, well, half buggy, half custom.

What's a good base buggy to start with, that's decently cheap, I'm assuming you won't need top notch for bashing, I just want half a chassis then build off it.

So, can you guys give me a helping hand and basically tell me what's going to be needed in the way of a diff etc?

Thanks alot.

Oh, and Just a few pictures of my slash and a few with my fathers savage XL

Dont know how your breaking it EVERYTIME you go out. I beat the snot out of mine on 3s lipo w/ Velineon... Anyways

Prerunners.... Big travel
front (18-22") Trophy truck (22-28")
rear (25-36") Trophy truck (28-42")

I think on an R/C car your biggest thing to pull off that prerunner look is going to be body choice, rim & Tire choice, and bumpers. IMO Slash bumpers are perfect, they almost match mine..

As for diff /rear axle... You really cant beat an Axial Trans/ Axle combo. Seem pretty damn stout and parts are Readily available... As for Diff.. What diff ? LOCKED...

Im building my "Mini me" version of my truck soon. Heres some pics of my 1:1 Rig. Yes, same rig. Different paintjob/bumper/tires/rims... My trucks gone through alot of "Make overs"

You might want to check the for sale section, or PM a member called Duuuuuude he started one and wants to sell it now.

Nevermind he sold it.

Slashes are good to use as a base truck. The front wheel width is pretty comparable to a WK or Axial axle width. Judging on your location and parts delema, you might want to go with an Axial rear axle. You can get a whole one on ebay for fourty bucks. You just have to chop the rear of the car off at about the rear shock tower and back. You turn the tranny sideways and lock it, and then you have a driveline to the rear axle. The innards of an Axial are pretty good, but you would probably want to upgrade the to lockouts and a rear case made of aluminum. Thats a good place to start the ball rolling.

If you want to go with super cheap, go with a Duratrax evader BX EXT. $120 US dollars.

Depending on what offset your wheels are, the Axial axle is too narrow. The Wheely King unit is nearly an inch wider, and using Axial beadlock wheels, it puts them right where they need to be.

I used a XXX-T chassis, which worked great, but I always have great concerns using graphite parts on a basher. Plastic is much more forgiving IMO.

I agree with using the Slash chassis as a base. Its already got the right width up front, and its plastic. You could pick up the bare chassis off of ebay pretty cheap, that way you won't destroy your current one should you decide to go back to stock.
