Spur gear alternative

Is there any plastic spur gear that fits in the scx10.3 to replace the metal one for a quietter transmission?

I'm not very familair with the SCX3 but I looked over the manual and it is a unique spur gear being that its metal and isnt the typical Axial 3 hole design. Its also pretty small in size and tooth count (40T).

I'm just spitballing but maybe a Traxxas TRX4 spur gear might fit? Its plastic and comes in a few tooth counts 39T and 45T and it also uses a slipper clutch (the hexagonal pads). The spur gears are only $3 and the slipper rebuild kit is $12. Amain usually has $1.99 shipping if its just a few small items.



Seeing that the stock gear is metal I kind of doubt any aftermarket companies made replacements which are typically a hardened steel construction anyway (they'd be just as loud).

EDIT: since the gear mesh is set with predetermined holes you will very likely need to experiment with what hole to use with the new spur gear, or its more likely that you'll need to slot/elongate the holes so you have some space to fine tune the gear mesh. It looks like if you leave the cover off you can at least have a look at the gear mesh.

Bar soap does the trick. Rub a bit on the spur and it'll quiet it down a bit. Unsure if the "belt" conversion from one of the other transmissions would fit.
 
I haven’t looked in forever but I swear mine was plastic, vaguely remember the bolt pattern was different… off to the garage…
 
Soap and wax is an old racer trick from back in the day. Exposed spur years couldn't be lubricated because a wet lubricant would collect dirt. So everyone used soap or wax. Still works today!
