SCX10 or SCX10 II

I'm kind of surprised by some of the comments from the guys who have been around a while. I don't understand how you could possibly recommend an OG SCX over the 2.0. Plastic wet noodle links, dog bones, huge ugly clamshell axles with shitty internals, a servo, motor, and ESC that are good enough for the first 2 runs maybe, spongy vague steering, etc. etc. The new SCX addresses all these issues and more with better packaging of components and more scale design. We can pretty much assume that reliability and performance will be as good as but probably much better than the OG SCX. There's only 1 unknown with the new design and that's the high pinion but the materials being superior to that of the old and the larger bearings have me pretty optimistic. There's no way you could get me to buy the original. This platform was ripe for redesign years ago. Time to move forward, not get nostalgic for a rig that needs as much money invested in aftermarket as you paid for the truck itself just to get it to a decent reliable performer. Just my 3 cents.

The only advantage of the og scx is the option to run over and under drive gears, but I don't think that is a justification to say with that platform over the scx10 II. The amount of money you need to dump into the old model scx just to get it up to the stock II is ridiculous. Steel trans gears, metal links, high steer knuckles, 8* c hubs, hd diff gears, cvs, and spools.....that's a couple hundred bucks.

buying a og scx10 kit and upgrading it all is stupid. buying the needed or "wanted" upgrade parts and then buying stock stuff for whats left over on lists of what you need or want to use is smarter.

ive pieced together a few trucks that were comp worthy and quality gears and what not for the price of that stock flimsy plastic roller in a box.

As a newbie there is no reason to get vested in an outdated platform like the SCX10. The SCX10 II isn't not different enough that it won't have support. In fact, Axial claims the SCX10 II is backwards compatible with the original SCX10. So definitely get the SCX10 II or, better yet, the Vaterra Ascender.

My .02 based on my experience (an OG SCX10, 2 Ascenders, and an SCX10 II): If you don't mind waiting on an SCX10 II, I'd recommend that over an OG SCX10. The II is much more capable out of the box and will almost certainly have tons of aftermarket support in short order. Even if it does end up having a couple of weak points, it's hard to imagine there being as many as there are known weak points on the OG SCX10. And the aftermarket will address weak points quickly, just as they did with the OG. So on balance, I think the II is a much better buy than the OG even though it's not yet time tested. If you don't want to wait on SCX10 II availability, I'd recommend the Ascender over an OG SCX10. The Ascender is quite a bit more capable and durable out of the box than a stock SCX10, and it now has ample aftermarket support. Like JRH has done, I've beaten the snot out of my first Ascender for over a year, and it hasn't flinched. Good luck with your decision!

As much as I love my old SCX10 I would not invest in one now, I'm not a fan of the Vaterra so Id go SCX2 or Wraith.

Agreed I'd wait for the 2- it seems pretty legit, just not loving the body! Other than that I can't see it being a bad truck!

The body is growing on me. The front looks weird since most people havent been painting the headlight buckets and lenses.

i bought a deadbolt back in Febuary, before any news of the "ii" and now wish i would've waited.... $$$hundreds in upgrades to the deadbolt to make it more capable couldve been saved///:cry:

With the new axle... I will miss being able to run beef tubes. was nice to get the weight down low. doesn't look like any room for tubes...

I agree. That's probably why VP is working on knuckle weights again.

Correct me if I'm wrong but knuckle weights are not comp legal as far as I know.

I don't comp much but I do like to keep my truck comp ready.

I have no issue with knuckle running weights and probably will if beef tubes are out of the question.

I'm not sure. I don't do comps so rules don't apply to me.

I don't think knuckle weights are legal for scale comps, but scale weights such as brass "rotors" or "brake drums" are legal. Beef Tubes and TSS make those.

I finally got a couple sets of beef patties from Beef Tubes yesterday and I am anxious to see how much they help.

I do run the beef patties on the front and rear of my truck.
they are nice for sure.
still I run both beef tubes and the patties and they make a huge difference together. "thumbsup""thumbsup"

I saw someone on facebook making tubes for the new axles.

you should post a link or a name.
