Quick Capra Rebuild before KOH

So I figure I’d post my re-rebuild on my original RTR Capra I picked up when they first came out.

Side note, I just picked up a Vanquish VRD Carbon, and I told myself I’m not going to build it till I dial in my Capra. The Capra was only used indoors for a few hours, the I tore it apart and put it my old Novak Goat 3S system I had sitting around. After fully dialing it in, I was not happy at all with the low end cogging, so I parked it for a few years.

I’m a little bummed to tear it apart, cause I wired it up really cleanly.

Rebuild stats after pulling the RTR items:

Servo, Savox SG-2290 at 8.4V with Castle BEC and Treal Mount

Novak Sensored Bruahless 18.5 with Goat 3S Speed Control

Vanquish Methods, Crawler Innovation Foam, with 1.9 Hyrax Predator

Treal Brass front knuckles and portal boxes, rear Treal Portal boxes

Battery, ProTek HiLV 4,100 3-Cell

The new build I’m going to keep all the Treal parts and battery but am switching to:

Reefs 777 running at 11.1 powered off the balance port of the battery.

HobbyWing Fusion Pro 2300kv

Tires and Wheel, Proline Baja Pro X tires G8 compound, and Proline Bead locks. I think this will be a basher crawler, and I’ll rebuild the Vanquish wheels for the VRD.

I think this rebuild will clean up a ton of the wiring and should be easier to tune.

Pics coming in an hour or so…

I’m going to reuse the 13T pinion.

Tight fit, had to shave the UCA Mount a little, and I think I will need to move the links to the middle position.

as much as I hate to say it that Novak esc is gonna suck compared to today's esc the last 5 years alone they have made huge improvements

Yeah, I’m hoping. That Novak setup was probably over 10 years old. The Fusion seems pretty nice, and appears decent quality.

The Capra gearing didn’t do it any favors either.

It only had RTR electronics though. I've never seen this happen to Proline tires. I wonder if the compound is G8 or Predator. I'm guessing Predator.

They were the predator compound, stored off the car in a tote in my garage.

I was pretty surprised to see them deteriorate so quickly, but, they are over 3 years old.

Side note, as soon as I get the link to work I can upload more pics.

I don't think that would have happened to G8 tires even at 3-years old. Garages do get hot as hell, but still the tire shouldn't look like this IMO.

i have a problem with all compounds of proline tires all mine crack like that in a year or so

my redcat tires do it too and also the axial r40 compound

j concepts don't seem to crack mine are at least 7 years old and no cracking

also axial r35 hold up pretty good my yeti xl tire are original and hardly ever gets run and no cracking and my 3.2 ripsaws are fine and my 1.9 trupidores are still good

pitbull alien compound cracked but the older compound tires didn't

I've had good luck using ic2000 to glue them back together to get a little more life out of them

i had a set of austar crock tyre lol that came cracked out of the package

Wow you learn something new every day. I have yet to see a single crack in any of my Proline tires in any compound.

Good to know about IC-2000. E6000 is some good stuff as well. I've used that to glue monster truck tires to the wheels and apparently you can pull it off and reuse the wheels and tires.

Well I’m trying to rebuy my Star so that I can post pics, but the PayPal link doesn’t seem to work.

But the Capra is all back together and runs really good with the Fusion Pro. I did purchase an 11t pinion as I think it needs a little smooth crawl. I probably could adjust that on the ESC and the remote, but wheel speed on 3s seems a little fast.

Also the dig servo is fully dialed in at 3 positions. 4WD, Free rolling rear, and locked rear. Once I figured out what I was doing in the DX5C it was pretty easy. I was struggling with realizing that the center position is the Trim, and the other positions just need the end limits set.

It’s all ready for the Hammers, I think the G8 compound Micky’s should be good for dirty courses. I hope Axial has there booth and RC track set up again this year.

I like the idea of gluing the tires to get some more life out of the Hyrax’s.

I think for the VRD build I’m going to try the JConceps Megalithic. Not sure yet on foam or gel.

axial r40 although I haven't had my newest set vary long I think axial stoped using r40 10 years ago but here they are

3 sets of proline tires

pitbull alien

and redcat

sorry for the thread jack lol hammers is a muddy mess and the rocks are slick
