Hello friends, I'm back at it with another round of hobby infused therapy. I'm just getting back into the hobby after a ten year hiatus and wow have things changed. There's so many options available that it seems some of the builds have gone by the wayside and it's becoming more like assembly threads than build threads. That's fine by me, it's just wild to see how things have progressed.

Here's a list of my build threads with the latest being my assembly thread for the Losi Rock Rey... What an amazing buggy.

Rock Rey comeback thread

My New Bronco

The Rock Cop

Crunk Rock volume 2

Crunky's Fronty-Jero

Crunks Red Wrangler rebuild

I'm calling this " Project Wobbly Horse " for a few reasons. First, when un-boxing the wraith I noticed that all four wheels have janky and wobbly foams. I've tried multiple times to stretch, smack, smash, roll, pinch and even punch these wheels back online on the wheels. They will run for but within ten minutes they are back to being wibbly wobbly. Secondly I'm naming it wobbly horse because I'm a fan of early Broncos. If you tilt your head a little and squint while you're looking at the the new wraith you might see bronco influence... Just don't squint too hard because it can go from Bronco to Scout real quick.
Lastly it's name Wobbly Horse serves as a metaphor for my skills for making toy trucks look real. I've done a fair enough job in the past but there's a bit a debris built up under these hooves and this old horse hadn't been on the track in a while.
Hopefully with the historical knowledge that this community shares I'll be able to replicate a few examples laid out here and my project will inspire others as this place has inspired me.
Big thanks to my local hobby saloon, Wreckless hobbies... Get there if you can, great folks.

I've had Wobbly out for two trail runs. First run was a two mile hike and the latest was a four mile hike. I run 2s 5200 mah lipo batteries and I can honestly say I'm amazed at the run times. I recently had one battery last the whole 3 hour, 4 mile trek.
My first thoughts:
I'm not excited about the chrome wheels, so the wobbly foams don't really bother me... They will be changed soon enough. It's very nose heavy, the battery in front keeps it very stable on the climbs, it side hills decent but coming down anything steep or off camber and it's somersaults time. The rear of the body seems flimsy and naked, it needs attention no doubt. Lastly I'd complain about the shocks, but we all know all Axial's shocks are supposed to leak.

As for plans, I have none really. I'm just gong to run it and make a few adjustments where needed. It's going to be a " budget build " style run so I can feel my way back into the hobby and still enjoy the ready to run placebo.

Some pics from the trail...

Well, it's just like me to get something brand new and I'll decide to rip it apart.

Prior to purchasing the wraith I had visions of rear inner fenders and a drop bed. It almost looked unfinished to me. I broke out the old styrene pile, some crusty old tools and I got to sketching.
Who uses tenax 7 anymore ?

I've picked up some flat black and I'll paint this thing up pretty. I've also found a sheet of double diamond plate styrene so the upper deck is going to be covered in silver.

The real trick was making the dropped in box and the upper deck be able to fit into the cage without taking the entire rig apart.

Dig that drop bed. "thumbsup"

It appears this little rig will be bringing me back into the sport as well.

That's awesome !!! Come on back, they got a special spot for us !!
I'm seeing more and more guys saying that they are getting back into the hobby. I guess we're like a bunch of old ruffle front shirts... Once so very stylish, now just trying to make a hopeful comeback.

Would it be bad of me of I continue faking things with styrene opposed to buying into this 3D printed epidemic ?

Hell naw. The world needs more artisanal crawler builds.
I feel left out, so many cool things to be printed on a 3D printer and I'm here with a ten year old bottle of Tenax and a dusty pile of styrene... I might have to cave in eventually.

For now it's back to hands on the plough...

And a sweet little pose from Tenax..

Welcome back!

Looks good. Nice start for sure. This is definitely one of Axial's all time best looking rigs. I can't wait to build one.

That tape measure and bottle are really going to give you crap suspension travel though. :ror:

Thank you for the reply. I'm already making revisions to the bed, I didn't like how sloppy I made the clearance sites where the cage passes through.
Oops, more styrene dust !!!

In actuality, that's the fun of building I guess... All guts and then you pay taxes.

Love my rc4wd motors. My lhs I get them for $10 and keep bullet connectors for easy swap. Altho on this nothing is easy.. haha
Truck is looking good. I've been trailing more then working with mine as I wait for items to come in.

I ended up not using it right now, the bullet connectors were a tiny bit smaller than what's on the stock ESC so I threw in an older 27 turn axial motor I had.
I took mine out for a trail run the other day and it was a 4 mile hike. My truck ran for three hours on one single 5200mah 2s battery... I thought that was amazing.

I like where this is going "thumbsup"

While 3D printing is great styrene still has its place.
It's super fun, but I can imagine making it in 3D would be cool because you can see the tolerances you're working with in front of you rather than in your head lol.
Looking good, I'm still trying to decide on my drop bed style. 8)
Your rig looks killer and I might have to copy your fastback mod video on the tubes [emoji106]
Nice work! Can't wait to see how the truck turns out!
Me either bud !!
Cool build Crunky, following along.
It's gonna be a slow process with some bullcrap mixed in so beware...

Had it out on the the test run for the 27 turn motor I swapped in. I have that 21 turn RC4WD smokey but I wanted to see what this old axial motor would do.. Not bad for 2S.

From the initial trail run I put down with this thing I realized it was a bit nose heavy. Trying to descend steep drops and this bad boy was doing an endo. I decided I wanted to add weight without draping the truck with brass goodies. I took to the styrene sheets and started cutting a fuel cell to hide a smashed stack of lead in. Right on, weight and scale goodness homemade.
