okay so i drive a 2008 gmc sierra 4x4 1500 work truck edition with a 5.3 liter v8. its a single cab long bed with 70,000 miles on it and an 8" superlift and 37" BFGkm2's on 18" XD monster wheels with a frontier front bumper replacement, custom stereo system, with a hypertech programmer, and 4:56 gears front and rear and a k&n Cold air intake. i have been wanting a 3/4 ton truck and really been wanting a diesel. my buddy is selling his 2000 ford powerstroke (king ranch) with a 7.3 with a standard tranny. Its a extended cab longbed with a 4" rancho lift kit and 35" nitto mud grapplers and 18 XD monsters. His truck has 115,000 it has a new clutch put in a month ago, a larger aftermarket turbo, new injectors, stacked bullydog and edge chips, true dual 4" straight pipe, bumper replacement all around with a headache rack custom stereo. I was wondering what you think i should sell the GMC for and how much i should pay for the ford if i were to sell mine and get the ford. I'm not sure if i should do the trade? I think they would be about the same price. I know his truck is well taken care of and not ran hard. he babies his truck. i do carry alot of weight in my truck on the weekends when i go hunting and fishing on the beach and would love the back seat. The diesel just makes sense to me because he gets like 18 MPG on the highway and a gasser of that amplitude wouldnt get near that and the difference in fuel price would still be to my advantage. Should i wait to get a little extra cash and buy a newer truck? i really like his ford and the solid front axle would be awesome because then i could put a locker in the front and rear for getting to my favorite fishing holes and running down the beach. im just at a cross roads and im not sure what to do. which would last longer the 7.3 with 115,000 or my gasser with 70,000? just let me know what yall think about it.

Well that diesel is just getting broken in at 115k. It should last just about forever with normal maintenance. Other than that, I have no idea on value.

the 7.3l is one of the best engines ever made. back it with a manual trans and it'll run forever. i'd unload the gasser in a heartbeat, hell i'm actually looking to do the same thing myself.

an f250 with that milage in good condition would be around 8-10k in my area. I would drop the gasser and buy the diesel in a heartbeat. The 7.3 turbo is an awesome motor, prolly the second best consumer level diesel ever built (behind the 5.9 cummins). Milage wise, you would prolly be looking at 25mpg with that diesel... whats your gasser getting?

as for longevity... Ive seen allot of 7.3's with 300k plus

no shit? it'd still get $12-14k here in southern NV.

thats why I said "in my area". Diesel isnt liked around here so prices are lower. Given, that kills you if your trying to sell/trade in. I think the problem is that Im in a major suburban area where trucks in general have less value.

Shame to have so much money sunk into that half ton if you really want a diesel HD. But what's done is done. I have no idea what your truck is worth, but here in central Texas, I'd say that Ford is worth anywhere between $11k-$14k, depending on condition. The 7.3L PSD is a great motor, no doubt. Backing it behind a manual is a great idea and may indeed outlast the truck itself. And being a King Ranch, that's a pretty rare combination I would think.

I wouldn't expect great mileage out of it, though. Most of my buddies with stock or lightly modded PSDs are only getting 13-14 around town and 17-18 on the highway, generally a few MPG less that us Cummins drivers. (15/20 for mine, for instance). Add bigger tires, a lift, and heavy azz bumpers and expect it to drop quite a bit more. Still, it would blow away the mileage you're getting in your lifted gasser.

Sounds like a pretty nice truck, but value-wise, I think you're going to be hurting on the sale of your gasser. Fuel prices have everyone concerned. Good luck, though, and hope to see you at some central TX scale meets! "thumbsup"

yeah i decided to keep my gasser for a little while. im heading of to college in the fall and im not really sure if i need it. and like tommy said i do have a ton of money into my truck. i think a 2000 model is just a little old. i dont want to go from 2008 to 2000 model and i'm getting like 13-14 MPG so its not to big of a deal. I'm thinking i will beat the hell out of my truck for the next to years and save some money and then get a 2007 duramax and do a solid axle swap in the front all at the same time and have the truck that i really want. and haha tommy if i ever get the scaler up and running again (lack of funds) i will see you there

I would say good choice because if you are daily driving it a manual tranny gets old fast. I am much happier with my auto now, diesels and automatics just go together. The tranny holding up to the motor is another story though.LOL
