Nomad's 1/6 Willys CJ3A

Very well executed! "thumbsup"

I'd love to come up with a later model windscreen and grill like those...

I had them 3D printed at www.shapeways.com

If you are interested, PM me your email and I will send you the files.
Then you could have your own printed.

I thought about setting up and selling them, but decided for the low volume it wouldn't be worth it. Besides, I got so many ideas and inspiration from the members here (you included) that I am happy to give back.

If you don't have a CAD system, it is not a problem. I will just send the files used for 3D printing.

Thanks again for the files, it was a learning experience for me to use the x_t format. I was able to build directly onto the parasolid model and make my tweaks on it. Shapeways was the best bargain for having it printed, $35 shipped to me. The model was too big to fit inside of the "fill box" to have it printed in the fine detail plastic, or even the polished white, so I had to use the standard "white and flexible" plastic, I'm expecting to have to spend a little bit of time with some body work to make it nice and smooth but it will still be worth it.

I'd love to see more pics of the 1:1 Jerp!

BigSki, I can't wait to see the results. That's about what the windshield cost me and it had to be done in the strong and flexible also. I applied several coats of filler primer then sanded and painted it. I could have taken a lot more time, but I wasn't going for a glossy finish. I will look for some more pics of the 1:1. I broke a rear axle in the 1:1 about 4 hours after that video was taken.

I am working on some upgrades to the 1:6 and will post pics as soon as I have something to show.

Bummer, I had contemplated bringing the Willys out for TDS. Would have been fun to wheel with another Willys.

I talked to a couple different guys while at TDS that had wished they had brought their Willys also. I did see a few more Flatfenders than I have in quite a while.

Just realized you were talking about your 1:6. I was thinking 1:1

I'll tell you what! That Willys is awsome. When I saw the pic I had to do a double take. It is the spitting image of the 1952 M38 that I used to own. Right down to the front turn signals, muffler, roll bar, and tow bar. I had a black Bimini top exactly like yours and the roll bar was black. The M38 is the military version of the cj3. It has that small panel under the windshield and a cutout on the passenger side of the hood towards the rear and just above the fender for the air intake pipe when driving through deep water. Very cool jeep you have there. Oh! Mine was orange with paint falling off everywhere. Lol I'm jealous!

The M38 also had a battery door behind the hood, passenger side, right on top of the cowl. I'm still jealous. Lol

Those hinges had a slot in them so you could unbolt the fenders at the firewall and tip the fenders and grill forward so the grill was at about a 45° angle then pick the thing up as one piece and remove them quickly for maintenance. The radiator wasn't bolted to the grill. There is a video on u-tube somewhere that shows how quickly you can take them old military jeeps apart. They took it apart during a parade with it rolling. I hope they had fun. I'm sure they removed all but a couple of bolts before hand. [emoji2]

New D44 Axles

Well, I saw the D44 axles on RC4wd and after some measuring I determined that they are exactly 1:6 scale. Once I knew this, I had to have a pair to match my 1:1. The problem was that my axles were a custom width. They were 1" wider than a SCX10 but narrower than a Wraith. So I decided to just use the RC4wd D44 housing centers, knuckles and C's then build the rest. The axle tubes are 1/2" x .120"w DOM. I cut out all the brackets and brazed them on. I couldn't find the right axle shafts for the rear, so I ordered some 5mm 4130 that was centerless ground and made my own.
I used Vanquish lockers and Axial 38/13 gears in the front and 43/13 gears in the rear.

On to the Pic's.

Great work! Makes me want to get back to fine tuning my leaf sprung willys. I see you are in Lakeside (San Diego). Would be fun to meet up sometime. We do runs at West Hills in Santee quite a bit.

I'm guessing that the end caps on the rear axle tubes come off for servicing the rear axle bearings since the hexes are brazed on?

No, they aren't end caps. Just bearing supports. The axles and bearings all slide in from the outside. The set screws in the Vanquish locker are what hold the axle in.

OMG... Those axles look amazing! Great job!!! Im just getting going on my build. I'm trying to figure out the front panhard/ track bar
