Newbie with questions

Hello guys, I'm pretty new to the RC scene after not having one since I was a kid 30 years ago. I was doing some research and keep getting pulled into the crawler scene. I used to crawl a Jeep years ago and I've been enjoying watching vids and researching them online. I believe I'll probably start with a micro as we get snow 8-9 months out of the year and I can still use it indoors. However, I'm stuck looking at all the different models and knowing which route to go. I'm leaning towards a TRX4M for the performance out of the box and being waterproof seems like a big plus. I also like the AX24 having 4WS, but haven't seen much good without lots of modifications. I do plan to modify slowly over time and fine tune things eventually but want to learn as I go without needing to rush into a bunch of mods to feel like it's capable. I'm open to any and all opinions as I'm learning and don't mind looking into other options as I come to a decision. I've also checked out the FMS FCX24 and it has a lot of great features out of the box minus not having many chassis options which is a drawback in my eyes. Ok, sorry for the long post.. and GO!!

I don't have one but the TRX4M is for sure a good place to put your money. I guess I've read enough on here to recommend it even though again, I don't have one. Traxxas has a ton of support for these rigs as do a host of after-market companies. Parts quality is as expected, solid and reliable too. I have no idea what the weak points of the TRX4M are but maybe someone will chime in. They still seem like a great bang for the buck even stock. Not sure how many people crawl theirs indoors as it's a little larger than your Axial SCX24/ 24th scale varieties but right off the bat I can guarantee that wrenching on the TRX4M will be far easier and less frustrating than messing with a 1:24 scale... smaller parts = more frustration.

Anyway... just my .02 from a guy that really wants one lol

If your looking at micros then thecTrx4m is definitely the way to go. I bought one for my 3 year old nephew and it makes my kids scx24 look like a feeble Walmart toy.

Thanks for the great responses guys. I've been trying to do a lot of research so that I don't end up regretting purchases. There seems to be a lot of solid choices out there so I'm not sure there are really any wrong choices, but perhaps not "best bang for the buck" choices. The more I learn about all of this the more it seems you can turn just about anything into what you want with the right mods and some know how.

For $150 bucks, the TRX4m is hard to beat! Great little rig right out of the box. I have 2 Axial SCX24's and they do not compare to the quality of the TRX4m.

Also, the bigger 1/18 scale size gives a better driving experience. They drive very similar to a 1/10 scale rig.

My vote would be Traxxas TRX4m all day long."thumbsup"

I pulled the trigger on my first crawler, and it isn't a TRX4M. Everyone in my area said to look at 1/10th scale as the rocks we have around here are too big for the mini's. I instead found a used / like new 4ws Capra and got it. It has a couple basic mods, front servo, Treal front brass portal covers, and wheels/tires. From the images it looks brand new. Pick it up in a couple days, but I wanted to thank you all for your responses. I still see a mini in my future at some point, but I think this will be a great starter rig and probably a gateway drug :mrgreen:

Snow doesn't stop me from running them all year. Parks that people walk frequently in the winter get the snow packed down enough to make it. Also if it warms up a bit and then gets cold again you can usually drive on top of the snow. Snow banks from plowing driveways make great crawling spots as well. I take my tractor with a backblade and plow a walking path on my property.

Fortunately we have a few indoor rock crawling locations as the winters here can be brutal. Mostly wrenching all winter, lol. Always wanted a kyosho blizzard for the snow months. One day!

It gets frigid here in CO, plastic parts go bye bye quick. Gives you stiff to wrench and replace over the winter, lol.
