Hey guys! New to the hobby...like as in I just ordered a crawler today and I'm waiting for it to ship lol. Its the Axial Scx10 ii deadbolt. Got it on sale for 269$ so I just jumped without any thought lol. Did I do alrite or should I have dearched for something newer? I can always buy another down the line, or do some upgrades and make it great. From anyone who knows their stuff or personally has owned one, what parts should I get in anticipation of them breaking and also what upgrades should I make first thing? Thanks!
P.s. have a rc truck already so not completely helpless, just never have run a crawler. Looks really fun though and can't wait! Looking forward to anyone who wants to chat or has some advice. Thanks!

I had a 10ii RBK for a while and it was one of my favorites still to this day. It just worked so good and was a blast. I didn’t really have any problems out of it except for the axle gears. After 2-3 months of crawling both front and rear diff gears broke a lot of teeth. (17 to be exact) I wasn’t running any power house motor either, just a basic 27T brushed motor. I upgraded to the SSD gears, went over that in my build.

I believe the Deadbolt comes with plastic links, so I’d replace them with metal ones from the RBK. I’ve never ran plastic links, but I have seen they can bend easily and Axials plastic isn’t the best.

Another place to look over is shocks. I again never built the stock axial shocks so I can’t prove it, but a lot of people say they leak almost instantly. I replaced mine with TRX4 shocks just to be safe.

Other than that I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. If there was something though, Im sure I covered it in my thread.

If you have any questions just shoot me a PM and I’d be happy to answer!

I’d look through some SCX10ii build threads and see what people are doing. Here’s mine for starters: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial-scx10-ii/622818-sln%92s-axial-experience.html

That’s a pretty good deal for the deadbolt, and a great way to get into an scx10.2. Granted, I’m not the biggest rtr 10.2 fan, but that’s a solid price.

SLN has it pretty much right. The weak points will be

Stock steering servo and servo horn, plastic gears, plastic horn. Might as well run it until it breaks.

Stock plastic trans gears

Stock sintered metal axle gear/locker assembly

Stock front axle dog bone joints

Shocks will leak immediately

Links will turn into spaghetti

Don’t let that worry you too much, just drive the thing and fix as needed. There are plenty of affordable upgrades for all those parts listed. If you have questions, search here first, as more than likely it’s already been answered. If not, post up and we will help where we can.

Enjoy the new rig!

the deadbolts are pretty cool rigs axial fixed most of the issues by the time the 10ii came out all the curent issues were covered already links and gears are about it
one thing i like to add to my rigs are the brass knuckles not really needed but helps the performance alot and at some point your gona need a servo better tires are allways nice but the ones it comes with arent bad

metal wheels are nice to have also

the shocks arent that bad realy you just have to put them together just right and there fine i have cheap axial shocks that are 7 years old and are fine and the new ones are alot better than the old ones all shocks will leak if not put together right

You did perfect.

Drive and see what you would like to imporve on. Often steering is less than wonderful on RTRs, so maybe a new servo at some point. Maybe softer springs for the shocks and thicker oil for the shocks. And add some weight to the front as low as possible. There ae a few ways to do it.

I quickly broke two of the one piece axles those come with but I set mine up to turn as tight as possible. If it happens replace it with an Axial or SSD 3 piece AR44. Do not get another one piece front axle housing. I have not had a problem with he rear one piece axles.
