Hey there, I have a brushless red cat wendigo rock racer that I am trying to make into a crawler. I got a 12t titan motor to put on it, but it gets hot very quickly and smells bad. I was told that a 12t was not the right pick, I have 2.2 super swampers on it and it has a 17 tooth pinion gear, not sure about the spur gear, it’s stock. I have it hooked up to a xl5 brushed esc on lipo mode running a 2s lipo. It gets hot like I mentioned In less than a minute of drive time and a previous motor started to smoke and crackle, (same motor, just sitting in a box for a while) does anyone know what to do to make this be a good working crawler for cheap? Preferably a motor suggestion or possibly gear it down? Thanks!

The Wendigo is geared irresponsibly high. Put in the smallest pinion you can-- a 9-tooth-- and a high turn motor-- 27-turn or higher. You could easily get away with a 45T in a Wendigo.

Then be prepared for a steep learning curve-- because the chassis has monumental torque steer, horrific bump steer, and the worst turning radius you're likely to encounter, ever.

But it will climb.

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!

Like Isotope said, gear down the pinion to 9 - 10 tooth. Also, make sure the gear mesh isn't too tight.

The Titan 12T is a 550-sized motor, which translates into about a 20-turn 540-sized motor. This really is where your issue is, recommend going to a 30 or 35-turn motor, this should keep your motor from frying.

Keeping the motor can in the slightly larger 550 size would be recommended, I'd get a Holmes Hobbies Trailmaster Sport 21t 550.

Check your temps after running for a bit, gear down as needed by swapping to a smaller pinion if it still runs hot.

The Titan 12t is more for lighter vehicles, 2S use and that's why a Titan 21t is used in their TRX-4 - more torque, can handle heavier vehicles and 3S.

If you can, I'd upgrade to a HobbyWing 1080 ESC - about $42, and that Holmes Hobbies motor is only about $20...

That will make for a better crawler - and the ESC is programmable, comes with a simple plug-in programming box.

Thank you everyone! I will try a 9 tooth pinion gear and I think I have a 45 turn motor laying around, I will try to come back and update! This is my first time using this website, so thank you for the good first impression.:ror:

Hello! I ended up getting a 10 tooth pinion gear and tried the 45t motor. It worked great. Very slow, but it crawls pretty good. Thank you for the help.
