Lipo Batteries

My SMC batteries puffed up pretty fast compared to the batteries I tried in the previous post. I have 3 of the SMC true spec? cheaper smc batteries. the 2 larger 3s 4500mAh and 4s 3700mAh puffed within 3 months enough to crack the case. The smaller 1500mAh 3s took longer, maybe a year. my ovtonic, hoovo, powerhobby, floreon, Goldbat, and turnigy batteries are not noticibly puffed after 2 years

I've had the same SMC batteries for over two years...over a dozen of them...and only 3 has puffed. And, admittedly, it was my fault, as I had, multiple times, left them fully charged for almost a week. This was before I knew better (I now put back to 'storage' level if I'm not getting to use them by the following day. I'll also point out that, of the 3 that became puffy, 2 of them were barely puffy, and still quite firm, thus still usable. You must have received defective packs, which, honestly, can happen with any brand, no matter how good (or bad) the brand is.

I only run GensAce or Turnigy Nano-tech. I've heard SMC are good.

Stay away from "no-name" brands.

You're in Hamilton, Ontario?

Hobbyking is pretty good for us in Canada. Try not to order from the US warehouse if possible though, the shipping is faster but I find you almost always get with border tax, a courier brokerage fee and another shipping invoice a month later because FedEx is the worst.

Try to stay away from Amazon, there's a ton a smallish vendors that would genuinely appreciate your support instead of helping to pay for Bezos' next mistress. There's a good shop in Ontario called Hobby Hobby that I've dealt with a few times and their service is awesome.

None of my SMC batteries have puffed - I have 4, 2x3S and 2x4S packs.

I've had them for just shy of 5 years!

(I will say that I have a handful of Goldbat packs from Amazon that also are still in perfect condition - they are just a couple years old, however)

I never used SMC but I've heard it said the quality isnt what it used to be in past threads.

Personally the one brand that I've had the best luck with is Gens Ace

I'll can vouche for Zeeee. I have 5 1500mah 3S packs, 2 of them are 3 yrs old. Still perfect condition. I didn't care for the Nano-tech packs, but that was more about my application of them than performance.

Good to know. I ordered a couple Zeee 5200mah 80c 3s hard packs for my new Rock Rey. I read lots of mixed reviews, including not to trust the "c" ratings, so I almost didn't pull the trigger. At $69 for two, I had to give it a shot.

Unfortunately, such is the truth...the 'C' rating shown by the great majority of manufacturers is a "lie". Many are showing inflated 'continuous' numbers, while others are showing 'peak' numbers. The purpose behind these lies is "money"...in other words, they're all competing for your money, and they know people want higher C-rated packs, so they inflate the numbers, hoping you'll buy their pack over tnt other manufacturers.

The truth is, they ALL do it...even the manufacturers claiming they don't (Spektrum, SMC, Revo, Traxxas, etc)...but, thankfully, a few (SMC, Revo, Spektrum, etc) inflate their C-ratings much less then others. It's just a matter of determining which manufacturers are listing C-ratings closest to the actual 'C' of a given pack...and, thankfully, there have been some videos on YouTube that provide that very information - people just need to search them out. One great source for determining "accuracy" over "claimed" (for batteries, servos, and more) is RC Review. While the channel does primarily test/review crawlers, thru do test other RC-related things, such as the aforementioned batteries & servos.

i think batterys are like laptops only a small number of companys actualy make them most companys they buy lipo cells in bulk then put them together them selfs im guessing the c rating is set by the company that makes the cellz and the battery brands just put that number up with out fully testing them
car batterys are the same way one battery factory makes interstate batterys die hard batterys trojen batterys and napa batterys and wallmart batterys and cosco batterys and on and on
we all know quality control from china is spotty so to say the quality of sead brand is slipping isent realy fair there just getting crap to start with and trying to make some lemonaid

so basicly what im tryin to say is there isent much difference in brands cauze all the cells are made in the same place anyway

That's not wrong but it might be a little misleading because there's a lot more to the situation than what we typically consdier.

The factories that are producing cells will have of varying quality levels. Not every cell that comes off the production line is identical. The higher quality/better made units go to companies like GensAce, SMC or Turnigy Nano-tech while the cheaper ones that are lower quality are picked up by all the other "no-name" brands (Amazon is particularly bad for this because it's so easy/lucrative for sellers to use that platform) we see in the market.

It's the same in car tires and batteries - centralized manufacturing produces the bulk of the units but varying levels of quality from the production line drive the price.

So what I'm really trying to say is that while there is a lot of carry-over from brand to brand, there is also very valid reasons for buying the more expensive units. And I'm not talking just LiPos anymore, this applies to damn near everything these days since we've outsourced almost all of our manufacturing overseas..

Definitely this right here. I'm reminded of the SD card issues from about 10 years ago where factory employees would come back after hours and run a 'ghost' shift using discarded materials to make legitimate-looking SD cards for less than the price of the real deal.

i agree but even the better brands get a bad cell make it past the quality control every now and again
ive had good luck on a few cheap ones that have outlasted all my higher priced name brand but mostly i get vary close to the same service life

if im buying deep cycle batterys to power my house ill spend the money even though there made in the same factory as the cheaper ones because they have a better warrenty

100%, QC can sometimes be a crap-shoot for the even the best companies out there..

The reality in manufacturing is that when it comes down to it, no matter how much money you spend, you're counting on humans and humans are notoriously unreliable..

I've been using Protek (Amain) shorty batteries. They have been "OK" but not great. The reason I say that is I had one that went bad. Amain shipped me a new one ASAP. However, the new one came in with 1.0V on two of the 3 cells. Amain shipped me another new battery. That one worked. Hopefully it was a transient issue.
