Hey all,

Just thought I'd show you my project, It's an XC chassied Land Rover Defender 90.

Some of you may be on the Scale 4x4 RC forums, where I've got an entire buildup thread (more or less) but I thought for anyone who isnt a user over there, I'd post up some pics of me project! ;-)

It's a defender 90 - the body is from that cheap chinese toy, except I went one stage further and cut a big chunk out of the back - which left me with this:

A few accessories:

Oh yeah, 1 full Exo-Cage:

Then, after quite a bit of fettling, filling and sanding (including a complete disaster involving filler primer...) I got to here:

Then, clearcoated the body, got all the accessories mounted on the shell, got the lights working, cage installed, and mounted on the body, then I started on the winch bumper - seen here:

and a quick movie - to prove it

Thats my progress so far - it's taken about a month of work so far, all that needs doing now is:

  • 4 Link the rear suspension
  • TLT shocks all round (ad in wanted section)
  • Finish Painting the bumper
  • Get electronics sorted out
and finally:

  • Get her muddy!!
I hope you all enjoyed that little run down of my landy, expect some progress photos when (if) I actually make any progress:roll:

^ if thats not praise I'm not sure what is

Cheers!

might already (in about 10 mins of being on the forums) have 2 sets of TLT shocks!

this place is great "thumbsup"

Awesome! What scale is that? 1/10? What brand is the toy? I wonder if we can get in the US. I would love to do a land rover. "thumbsup"

hpi just released that body here.... its not exact or as scale but we can get them now...

great build i love it... filler primer is never good.

Hi,

It was off a cheap chinese toy (crap chassis - 2wd, slow as anything, couldnt out-articulate an ant)

You find them on ebay from time to time, I got mine from there for about ÂŁ20.

The HPI one is less detailed, lexan and much more readily available.

Filler primer: I started spraying it, after i'd finished filling the body, to get a nice decent build of primer, and it started reacting with the green paint (which I'd previously painted, before chopping the shell)... I was mad to say the least

So then I had to sand it all down again, about 2 days work then used normal primer!

still a few marks here and there, but it was built to be used so as soon as it gets muddy I won't mind 8)

ahhh, that will require new shocks (the body is heavier than the touareg - the fron shocks won't actually return anymore :-P ) and the rear 4 link doing "thumbsup"

An IFS Defender? :(

Yeah, thats the only thing I can't change I'm afraid...

well, I say "can't" ;-) SAS could (and has) been done to XC's... it's enough work as is lol

Yeah it's quite popular to have a spare on the bonnet here in the UK, the more the merrier I guess!

it's actually 1:8.6 scale, but near enough to keep the standard 1.9's, might look into some spacers, as the wheels tuck in a bit too much at the moment.

I've got some TLT shocks on the way (thanks heavy) so expect an update with some decent suspension (and articulation) soon!
