Lance Armstrong: Beats ball cancer, now gives up after witch hunt.

Oprah's milking this golden cow for two nights of entertainment. For her, it's all about the ratings. For Lance, confessing to Oprah is a smart move. He knows she's a nurturer and a forgiver that won't hit him with the hard questions. Lance will likely "confess" by saying everyone else was doing it and team manager's, the UCI, etc. all turned a blind eye hence deflecting responsibility off himself. Make no mistake, his confession to Oprah will have been carefully planned out by his lawyers and PR people.

The thing that pisses me off with Lance is not so much that he doped, but that during his reign he was an outright bully using his fame and power to destroy people's reputations, file false libel suits, and forcing Trek into dropping Lemond's bike brand. And he did it with cold calculating arrogance. None of this will be brought up in the interview though I'm sure.

I've always been a Dave Wiens fan, so I wonder if he will rightfully be recognized for 7 consecutive Leadville 100 wins. Lance beat him after he won 6, but now that Lance's credibility is in the toilet, I wonder how many other major wins will be taken from him.

I think the Leadville 100 is a non-US cycling or other cycling body sanctioned event. Hence his win wouldn't be one of the ones stripped from his official record.

No surprise to me at all that he "doped", I'm more surprised he is coming out about it. Of course he may lose titles but he won't lose his money. May even make more money.

EVERYBODY uses all advantages possible in these competitions. If they aren't using drugs, they are blood bagging and boosting red blood cell counts with transfusions. The range of "supplements" used in cycling is long and quickly changing. Nicotine, Amphetamine, Cocain, strychnine (rat poison).... you name it and it has been tried. These days it is gene therapy and hormone therapy. Adjust your hormone levels during training, taper off just in time for the tests while keeping a portion of the gains.

I'm more interested in the cutting edge doping than the "poor me" story behind it. I say that we should let athletes drug up, it is their own bodies they are wrecking or helping. If everybody does it now, what will it change to end restrictions?

Because that would send a message that to be competitive you have to do it chemically. I'm not cool with my kid doping up to play high school football.

Agreed, and there's been cases of Cat 3 racers (equivalent of the weekend warrior types) using drugs and getting caught. Even within the pro ranks where they presumably have doctors looking after their doping needs and monitoring their health, there were a number of deaths directly attributed to their use of EPO. Heart attacks in guys in their early 20s because their blood was so thick, their hearts just couldn't pump it around their bodies any more.

And to be fair, cycling has made a lot of strides towards adopting a more anti-doping culture and more progressive testing in recent years, unlike a lot of other pro sports. Their is still a strong omerta within the pro ranks unfortunately, so I doubt very much this issue will go away completely.

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. I just looked into this though and at least it's nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks this way:

Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and Dave Wiens Deserve Leadville 100 Wins: Todd Wells Deserves Course Record | News | mountain-bike-action

I definitely agree with you Juan that he should be stripped of his Leadville win, just officially don't think he will be.

Personally, I know I'm pretty tired after a 100 mile road ride. Can't imagine a 100 mile xc ride. Hats off to those guys!

Uh, McGwire admitted he used roids like two years ago....

And he really has no records anymore, not sure what title he has either......no hall of fame, doubt if he ever makes it in.

Where the hell was I? Was it all over the news like this Lance crap? Well, forget what I said about McGwire, but Lance is still a dumbass! :ror:

If they're going to take away all of his titles, they should take away everyone's titles for the last 30 years since they ALL blood dope.

... they should take away everyone's titles for the last 30 years since they ALL blood dope.

I don't think it goes back that far, but I agree that they should just throw those 7 years in question out the window. Giving the title to the guys that came in second is just dumb.

It was all over the news, but Big Mac is no Lance, so its not really on the same level of it....plus it didn't follow the course of this.

While baseball had its steroid era, the players back into at least the 50s were using other drugs to enhance performance.....thats why its laughable we keep out guys like Bonds, but allow guys in who were cheating too, just with a different drug....of course, Gaylord Perry is in the hall, and he cheated on the field every night with his spitball.

Lance is a douche and I don't really get his motive for this.....and he stands to lose millions of dollars in lawsuits that will be instant wins for the person suing.

Ohhh, looks like poor little lying, cheating, lance just lost an Olympic bronze medal. Karma!"thumbsup"

Meh just another bike prick riding down the middle of the road ignoring traffic laws. This is not news, if it has any effect on your day you should seriously reevaluate your life.

I say remove drug testing completely. How much fun would it be to watch the tour de frog when half the field is methed off their balls doing 50 kph UP the hills?
