Intro and setup questions

Hi all, I have been lurking and reading the forums, trying to figure out what I want to do. At the moment I have a Team Associated SC10, it's fun to bash, but admittedly it's on the fast side for me, it's pretty much stock and I know there are things to do with it, but the Bomber and it's apparent ability to do a little of both is appealing. We have a weekend place just east of the mountains up here in Washington and our property is prime for me to set up a course where I can let it run a bit and crawl too.

I'm thinking I'd like the ratio to be around 60/40 to 70/30 bash to crawl, I don't need insane top speeds but it would be fun to crank it up now and again.

I have listed items I was thinking to start with, I know there's a million ways to do it so I listed what I was looking at below. The big ones are I want to make sure I have the right motor (i'd like to go brushless sensored), esc and servo if I were to go with the 2 speed conversion.

I'm open to being talked in or out of anything and thanks for the assistance, just reading through the forums has been eye opening to what you can do with these things.

That's a great list! It's nice to see someone who has already done their homework and not blindly asking for opinions. Here's my 2 cents:
  • You really don't need the big Castle BEC, the small 10A one will suffice.
  • Get some VP SLW hubs, the plastic stock ones will spin on the hex.
  • Wait on the 2-speed, a good brushless system will provide plenty of range in speed.
  • Invest in a stainless steel screw kit from Team KNK.

A couple more things I noticed:
  • All your choices for ESC, motor and servo are rock-solid! You might consider the Mamba Monster X ESC as well, it's the hot new top-end ESC.
  • Stick close to the stock gearing of 64/12. 60/40 to 70/30 is waaayy too tall.

^agreed. sooo many times of seeing 'whats the best' i tend to just skip over those posts.

definitely hold off on the 2 speed. i took it out of my bomber and put a wraith trans in it. simplifies the rig quite a bit and opens up alot of room.

fwiw in almost every rig i own i run the same combo:

hitec 79xx servo, mmp, castle bec, tekin pro4 3300, and a 3s 2200mah lipo.

ive comp'd and ttc'd the crap out of that combo and it has never not been enough. tons of low end crawlability and wheelspeed when you need it.

that said, i think the list you provided will get you a very nice setup. "thumbsup"

Thanks for the info so far guys, it's appreciated, I always try to do some homework before I just spew! :)

So, no need for the the 2 speed for what I am doing, is the Tekin ROC or the Pro4 3300 the way for me to go?

I will look at the Mamba Monster X, and thanks for the advice on the gearing, I had forgotten to ask, but wanted to know what would work best for what I'm wanting to do.

On the VP SLW hubs, what size would I need? There's lots of choices:
RC Accessories - 2.2 Beadlock Wheels - SLW Hubs - Vanquish Products

Thanks again!

I'm partial to Holmes' stuff but if it weren't available I'd get a ROC412.

I got the SLW 350 for my kids' Bomber, you might want to go to the 475 for more stability when bashing. Better yet, get a set of the Shifts hubs and you can adjust the offset as needed.

Ok, so the Holmes 2200 would work? Sorry if that's a dumb question, but it seems like a big disparity in power. I looked for the 3500, but it seems that those aren't available at the moment.

Thanks!

We just had a discussion on the Puller Pro 2200 and it seems ideal. You just need to choose your battery voltage accordingly. I put the comparisons for 2s-6s on a stock Bomber in post #5 there.

i was going to post in that thread but didnt want to come off as challenging anybodys research. but in my opinion, other than dropping in a 4s for the occasional mud event there is absolutely no reason to try and utilize everything from a 2s up to 6s, not for brushless. everybody will have a different opinion on this, but for me 3s and a 3000 to 3500 range kv sensored motor is perfect, and simple.

my rigs are all wired for 3s and alot of the secondary things like lights and winchpower which are able to handle 12v i run right off the deans plug.

In another thread, Holmes just posted that the 3500's should be on the site today for purchase. I'm waiting for one as well.

The flexibility to run 2-6s does indeed sound fantastic but in reality, i'll be running 3s packs for the most part. I also have some 2s packs from my 1/16 summit that I may run so that's my reasoning for waiting on the 3500 from Holmes.

I have the HV500 servo, its nice fast and quiet for sure.

 You should definitely get the kit, which is what I had assumed. You're already getting the electronics, plus you get quite a few nice upgrades over the RTR, just check out my comparison chart.

You wouldn't need to pick up the swaybar and link kits right away.

Yeah, I agree completely badhoopty - you don't want to be running a whole slew of batteries, I was just illustrating the different speeds possible. I only run 3s in my rigs and an occasional 4s in my Wraithzilla when I want to break parts.

Find a motor and voltage combo that works for you and if you want to give it a little kick just drop in anther cell. "thumbsup"

Oh wow... I didn't realize there was such a difference, I will look into getting the kit, that would save me some $$$ for sure. I will now have to research on a radio/receiver combo as well, suggestions are welcome! :)

^^^ Yeah, I've been waiting on this myself, ordered a 2200kv by mistake, only have 3S batteries... They said they'd replace it - it's never been even installed. Gotta mail it off on Monday!

Thanks for the heads up guys! So for those that went the direction of the kit, did you still replace the "upgraded" parts that came with it vs the RTR version?
