Hear me out though. IFS trucks can have a good time crawling while still have the high speed stability racing through rough terrain. Only thing is there is no scale IFS trucks on the market or even kits. I am determined to fabricate an IFS for my Trail Finder 2 hilux.

I would like to start some discussion on the subject as I have never done any major custom work. What axle would be the best to start out with to narrow, is steering going to be different then a solid link, fabing up some CV axles?

So who is game?
 
I think your best bet would be merging a current short course truck front end and adjusting the a-arm mount in enough to match the wheelbase of the rear. Or using widening hubs or something on the rear.

I think the problem you'll get into is having enough suspension travel in the front to match the rear, and not dragging the center on everything as it doesn't really rise as the suspension compresses. I recall someone trying and having issues dragging the bulkheads worse than you would your pumpkin.

Some one around here used a MERV front end. I know of another guy using a slash 4x4 front end. I think the hard part would be mounting the IFS set up to the chassis.
 
Don't know if you've looked at it yet but RC4WD has the solid rear axle conversion for SC trucks. Similar to what you want. Only problem is that it is based on a front pan chassis instead of a more scale C channel chassis.

There are some builds that have used SC chassis for scale HUMMV's. They tend to be very tippy and do alot of three wheel motion when crawling, But like you said are much more stable at speed.

That is something to consider. My motivation is springing from this site that sells long travel kits for IFS Toyotas. Page 2. Talking with them about getting schematics has shown they are really interested in the thought of my project. I don't plan to go up against real crawlers, but would still be cool to show up to a IFS scaler.
 
It is absolutely possible. As a comp crawler it probably wouldn't fly, but as you said for the scale aspect its a home run.

As far as using a pan chassis you could probably get around that with a tube frame made to fit the a-arms similar to a sand rail.

I honestly think that keeping a scale wheelbase will drastically limit suspension movement. You have to have enough width in the center for the diff making the arms shorter lowering the amount of movement.

I follow you about the length of the a-arms limiting travel. I will see what is what when I get some drawings done.

I am a new to the scaler world, could you explain what a pan chassis would be, is it the stock chassis that is in the Trail Finder 2 kit?
 
Okay, I follow you. Well I get my kit Monday or Tuesday and after I get it built, I can start trying to draw it out and see what I can come up with.

This thread may not be applicable to the Newbie section, does a moderator need to move this?
 
There are a couple good build threads in the Wraith section. Just don't mention IRS. For some reason people go bonkers when you tell them an IRS is a good idea. :roll:

IRS has it's applications. Then again, the site does say rccrawler... "thumbsup"

There was a guy in the PNW that built a IRS kit for Tacomas, I tried to order one when I had my 1:1 4Runner. Folded up shop it seems but his product looked bullet proof.

Trail Finder 2 has been ordered!!! Should be here Tuesday :badger:
 
In my opinion the best 1/10 scale IFS would use the suspension/diff from a 1/16 Revo. The width matches up with SCX10 axles, and its not completely huge looking (+the ball mounts are a lot more scale). Though I don't think the 1/16th traxxas parts will hold up very well to big 1.9 or 2.2 tires.

That is why I am wanting to find a solid axle that I could cut up and get some cv shafts working with it. Just don't want to drop $60 on a hunch. I will if there appears to be some confidence from others.
 
Brazwen built a rock racer type with ifs and solid rear axle. Saw it posted on the epacrawlers.com site. Not sure if he posted here before.

I'm reading the thread now. Very impressive! No way that would fit under the Mohave Hilux body :cry:

It seems like if you were going to take an IFS crawling, you would have a beefy skid plate anyways. A skid plate would hide the differential. I never had a skid plate on my 1:1 4Runner so I saw it all. That is what I am wanting to base an IFS setup on.
 
Also the tamiya cc01 is ifs. I am using one now for my Subaru brat build.

Would like to see some photos of that. I am a bit of subaru enthusiast myself. When I get to that master level of styrene body building, I want to make a 2nd gen GL. I have an 83 GL for my 1:1.
 
Nice build. There was a guy on a subaru forum that had a nice subaru brat crawler. Lives fairly close too, he might want to sell it. :mrgreen:
