I myself have been siping tires for awhile now to increase the performace of tires in most conditions. It is a simple and very effective upgrade so to speak.I have looked and have not found many threads to be of help when it comes to performing siping on your own,so I decided to do a How To thread for anyone interested in siping your own tires.I have found a simple method that works very well.

You will need some tools for this..Main one being a Dremel. You will also need the reinforced cut off dremel blades. My set up is pictured below.

Now,one thing you might do is get all you tires together, now you can look at them and get a game plan down on where you want your sipes. You can go through and mark each tire with a Sharpie that way you can get uniform results on each tire. My Rovers already had lines in them so I skipped this step.

The more I siped tires I began to develope a method of doing it which makes the task very easy with the right tools.

When you have a tire in front of you,it should be facing like pictured below.
Also you will want to sqeeze the lug your are siping, like shown below.Just try and position the lug where when you bend it you will be cutting the sipe in the middle of the bend.Helps let the cut open up.
Picture041.jpg

Now when you start to cut into the tire move very slowly into the lug and you will see the cut start to pull a pealing back kinda movement and open up,You cut into the lug until you reach the carcass..This is very helpful trick to help you not cut too deep into the tire.Another big thing..TAKE YOUR TIME!! Do not rush, your fingers are important.
Picture044.jpg

Here is what it looks like after the cut.You can see how the cut in lug opened up and You can also see how to kinda guage how deep to cut to get to the carcass without going too far.
Picture042.jpg

Then just repeat these steps on each cut.In the end you will end up with uniformly siped tires. These little trick also make the task very easy and a easily achievable goal.

Been thinking about siping my tires. Its cool to see some action pics, thanks.

One other thing....don't wear clothes that you care much about. I ruined a sweatshirt awhile back. Still can't get the damn melted rubber balls out of the sleeve and cuff .

I keep a sweatshirt on the workbench for that very reason."thumbsup"

I might have to do that sometime..:)

So you've noticed improved performance on those Rovers in forward bite or side hill situations or both?

X2, I siped a set of hammers with a razor blade and it did help, but the cuts would stick back together so I think the dremel would be better. I might try this on my rovers tommorrow, always looking for more grip.

I have noticed a serious increase in forward bite, aswell as sidehilling hold.
Made a good tire work amazing..

More grip you shall get...And yes the dremel blade is much thickers and helps keep the rubber from sticking together.

just man up and wear a short sleve shirt.
great thread for those who didnt know how to do this!

Safety glasses are a good thing to. The Dremel works well, very easy.

lol, I just did this to my Moab XLs! Mostly just to get a few more crawls out of them before I finally get a new set (maybe the new HB Rover pinks?) Anyway, I wanted to offer my two cents:

-Try to sipe when it is cold outside (go outside too!), as the rubber will be harder and easier to work with; and also the molten bits of rubber will cool quickly enough to merely turn to fine rubber "dust" that can be cleansed off really easily.
-If you want a wider groove in your tires, stack up multiple dremel cutoff wheels onto one toolpiece. This allows you to cut a wider path into the rubber for a more "one lug into two" look..

I may post pictures tomorrow of my own siping job on my Moabs (I cut the center triangle lugs into two parallel to the axis of rotation of the wheel), if anyone wants me to..

Well I got mine done, much faster and easier than the razor blade I used before, plus they don't stick back together. Took about an hour taking my time, playing here in the house they deff have more foward bite. I got a comp in the morning so we'll see how they do on the rocks. But I'm happy so far, until I get some cash and can try out the pink rovers anyways.

Good info "thumbsup"

I stacked 2 cutoff wheels when I did mine to get a little wider cut.

I cut every line on my rover's down to the carcase, and I cut the "open lugs" 3 times each. They grip amazingly well now.

Did you cut yours in the same pattern as Jeepial's?
