How To: Installing an MPI voltage regulator

Alrighty, thanks!

I suppose the only question I have left now is what channel to plug the ESC's into, hopefully someone already knows this, or I can just start plugging things in.

All you need is an extension (if you even need that). Just plug your ESCs into the proper channel and let the dx6 do the work.
 
Grizz - back in page one or two, you commented that you haven't had good luck running JR servos on 7 volts. Right now I'm running an MPI regulator through the batt plug on the RX, with a 5995 on the front, and a Z9000T on the rear. I've been thinking of cranking up the voltage a bit, but I'm worried about the JR servo. The thought has crossed my mind that if I were to run an RX pack instead of the reg, it would probably peak off at something over 7 volts on a 5 cell pack, and it would be going straight to the servo for the first couple minutes until the voltage tapered off.

Any thoughts here.

BTW - I was only thinking of going up to 6.5 volts, not the full 7.

I ran a nearly identical setup to yours (5998TG, Z9000T, RX pack) in my super and never had any problems.
My statement about the JR servos came from when I wired my servo power directly to the 7.2V main battery on my 2.2. I had two JR 125ST's burn up within 2 minutes each.
Very likely this is because the sub-C pack was at 8.something volts after charging it. However I never had any problems with the HiTec servos.

If you believe that my failures were caused by the excessive voltage then use your 9000T without fear because the voltage regulator will not allow the servo to see that 8.something volts.
I don't think you have anything to worry about but please don't blame me if the JR servo smokes and the Hitec doesn't. :lol:
 
I wonder if there is something about the St125 circuit board, my buddy was running them in his maxx truck, and he went through about 10 in 2 months, never broke any gears, just fried them, and he was just running off of the superduty 6v BEC, no reg or rx pack.:?: After he switched to the 5955, he never had a problem.:)

btw, I have everything up and running on that setup I ordered from you, just tweaking it now and getting to work on the body panels. Jesus there are a lot of cables to hide on this thing.
 
If I am running 2 servos Hitec 5955TGs, would it be best to have the voltage regulator set at 7v?
I wouldn't say "best", but you will get more power. Just check your servo temp often until you get used to it.
It will also allow the voltage reg to pass more current for a given temperature.
 
That makes sense. My ACC234 heatsink gets kinda warm, not hot just warmish......I don't know why, I am running the output voltage at 6v and the input is only 12 cells:twisted: :lol: I think I might crank it up to 7v on the output, so it can work a little easier.8)
 
I ran the car around my backyard last night with the VR set at 7v for about and hour and nothing on the car really even got warm at all. The servos and VR were cool to the touch, I suppose all went well when I set it.
 
Would adding this help any on a Dual ESC set up? Like on a Clod. I'm adding another Mamba Max to my 2.2 Clod. I run one Tower Pro MG945. My guess is that I shouldn't need it by no means. Since running Dual ESC's doubles your BEC. Both MM's have 1.5A BEC so 3A BEC is plenty for one Servo. Would there be an advantage to running the Reg on my sit up? Should I just save the Reg for my Super which runs dual MM's, but with dual 5955TG's. Since the 5955's pull alot more juice.

I am running two 5995s on my super with two TR2s and the same voltage reg. "thumbsup"

If the Max's BEC voltage is only 5 volts, then yes, there'd be an advantage to using a regulator that allows more volts.

My Mamba 25 is only 5 volts, and 1 more volt really wakes up my servo.

I use the fixed 6 volt version.
