HobbyPlus RC 1/18 CR-18 Crawler Ready-To-Run

Bummer the motor is so tiny though. 275mm seems pretty big for a 030. At that size, I would think they would have used a 370 like the temper or barrage.

I like what I see though! Them wheels and tires look nice. 56mm and beadlocks!

I think that the size will allow for a lot of customization and mods to get larger motors to fit ;-) But I don't think I've seen any actual videos of this guy running, so it's hard to know if stock will be enough.

Hopefully the extra gear reduction will compensate. I've been waiting for this one to get released!

Yeah, there's a lot of "new and improved" stuff going into this one! Even the fact that it runs with a 2s lipo tells me that the electronics/motor is different from the CR24's, including the CR24 upgrade kit.

I've emailed AT to see when and how much these will go for - their live chat didn't have any answers. Bizarre how they'd put up a blog post without any of that info or the ability to pre-order

CR-24 is 2S compatible, I've never had a problem with mine. I know the motor was supposedly the same 88 turn from the CR-24 upgrade kit, I wouldn't be surprised if the electronics came from there as well.

Also 25mm longer than even an SCX24! 28mm longer than a mini Gelande. This makes for some interesting options. Use CR-24 axle ends to bring the width back down and it's perfect for long WB 1/20

Hmm. The manual for the upgrade kit made it a point to say that only 1s can be used in 030 and 050 motors with that esc , which is why I never ended up ordering it.

Now I'm confused [emoji51]

Oh I thought you meant the original electronics. I haven't cracked open the upgrade kit yet

I assumed that if the upgrade kit won't allow for 2s, then the original stuff shouldn't. My CR24 came with a 1s lipo.
Looks like the CR-18 uses a different 2-in-1 than the CR-24, not the in upgrade kit ESC.
Yes the CR-24 comes with a 1s, but it's 2s capable.

Any reason why they would say the performance esc will only do 030 and 050 motors with 1s?
I'm not sure. Mine showed up a few days ago but I've been traveling for work a lot since then.

Has anybody tested the polarity on these? I've read some alarming news about the CR-24, and am wondering how much investigating and risk I'm going to have to do in order to run a CR-18 with the same Lipos we run on my son's Panda Tetra X-1. (Really just trying to decide if it's worth the hassle getting a CR-18 or just get a second Tetra X-1)

Also, can someone confirm that it uses a Molex connector? I'll probably just get a Molex male to JST-RCY adapter for the car and only swap out the connector on the battery.

The CR-18 is reverse polarity just like the CR-24 and many micro drones and also uses the same JST DS battery connector found on the Losi Micro. You can just pull the pins in the plug to swap the wires around to change polarity.

What is your concern? That a fire will be started by using the Tetra lipos in the CR-18? Is the Cr-18 not lipo compliant?

His concern is the reverse polarity he mentioned. The CR18 and CR24 are both lipo capable and come with reverse polarity lipos typical found on micro drones. Hooking up a regular lipo will burn electronics and batteries unless you swap the wire polarity

Spoo knows exactly what I'm asking. So it sounds like the important part is that the red wire from the ESC goes to the black wire on the regular lipo? As long as that's correct, I see at least two options: 1) Put a JST connector on the ESC and make the wires connect as mentioned above, 2) Get a micro losi to JST adapter and swap the pins as needed make the wires connect as above.

Also, pictures seem like the JST-DS and Molex are the same thing?

I've also read that the CR24 can only handle about 6V and if running a 2S lipo you should install capacitors to bring voltage down...wonder if the CR18 is the same.
