HobbiCo / Great Planes / Tower Hobbies

"thumbsup" Very gracious.

Just curious, how many people order from Tower because of their selections verse ordering because of the easy pay system?
I'll be honest I have a set amount of "mad money" I can spend without dipping into the household fund or savings. I don't like to order on credit cards, and I can't save, mad money, for nothing.
Under my payday, mad money I order from ebay or RPP, over that tower.
Past the easy pay, I don't find a lot of crawler specific parts. Other then complete rigs Im not sure them losing vendors affects me.

Tower was my go-to for Tamiya, Kyosho and Pro-line. Axial when the kits were on sale...

Nobody else I know of had the selection of Tamiya + Kyosho that they had.

The other stuff I just ordered because of coupons and one of the few places for me that doesn't charge sales tax since I'm in CA.

I'd order more from Amain and RPP if all things were equal though.

Two Tower catalogs came today. Why do they continue to waste this money during such a difficult time.

Its amazing to me that Tekno, Associated, Team Losi, and a few other companies can develop new platforms every couple years but the crawler and basher crowd get stuck with the same designs for 10+ years.

They are two very different segments of the same hobby.

Crawler platforms (if they are halfway decent) have an extremely long life. Not because they are bulletproof out of the box, but because they are modded so extensively. And comparatively, they are much simpler machines.

Race platforms are rarely modded. That is not the nature of the sport. More often than not, a race rig is largely going to spend most of it's life exactly as it was when the box was opened. Therefor, to stay current and competitive, they need worked over every few years as the technology progresses.

I have my budget, and if I want to go over it I sell something off. Cash out of pocket for everything (or PayPal), I do not believe in using credit for hobby purchases.

Its a 0% interest loan. I have no shame in taking it out even if I have the cash sitting here.

With that said, I don't do it often. Last year the only thing I bought on EZ Pay was my Marlin Crawler and that was just due to the timing. They are/were hard to find and Tower just happened to have one when I didn't have all of the cash. I'd probably still be hunting for one if I didn't jump on it then. Can't remember the last time I used it before that.

Tower has just closed its Reno warehouse.

I feel like such a dumb@$$, thank you.

Not a dumb question at all. At Tamiya USA you'll either overpay by a lot or you'll find cheap deals on sale.

https://www.tqrcracing.com is a great place for Tamiya parts. They have some kits.

AMain, RPP, and Stormer are also places for Tamiya kits.

Nobody has the extensive selection that Tower did.

While I appreciated Tower's selction of Tamiya kits, I always hated the fact they only ever seemed to have a weird, incomplete collection of parts for every Tamiya chassis.

Need a suspension arm that was used on multiple vehicles over the past 6 years? Nope, never carried them but we do have knuckles from a TA01. Like this highly detailed, multi-part body? Cool, we have the lexan shell but don't carry the exterior parts or the decal sheet. :???:

I just received shipping confirmation of my order I made 2-days ago. Though, I don't know which warehouse it shipped from.

I hated 'burning' a $50 gift certificate for something I don't need at the moment, but perhaps it was a good move considering what's going on with Hobbico???

if you cant pay for it you don't need it.

Tamiya sells Tamiya stuff made by Tamiya from Tamiya.

Large companies don't just close their doors. At the very worst this company will file for bankruptcy, and we will all know about it well before closing the doors. If it gets bad enough the company will restructure, pay off their debt pennies on the dollar and remerge hopefully to do business again.

This isn't some mom and pop store, it all has to play out in court if they do go bankrupt and that takes time.

If anything we would likely see a liquidation of stock before any of that, or at least some pretty hardcore discounts.

You might think this is moving fast, because of this thread, but really its been going on for some time. It just looks fast because the information is consolidated.

Enjoy the show

Mostly agree but there are plenty of companies that do just 'shut the door'. Class action suits net pennies on the dollar for those caught in the middle.

I know $50 is nothing but I feel better knowing I won't lose it's value should things go 'sideways' quick with Hobbico. Besides, the gift certificate came from my son so I don't want him to feel cheated should the company 'fold'.
