HB1080ESC respond and heat issue.

Hi all, I am running a trx4 sport on 3S with a HB1080, 21T motor and a 20kg servo. Overdrive on the front axle and stock transmission gears. Basically the more or less most budget friendly TRX-kit setup as advertised/ promoted/ recommended via YT by the RC guru's.

I literally have less then 10 min of run time on this setup. Everything installed fresh out of the box.

This afternoon I ran my TRX in a friends garden, drove up a kids slide and gave a full throttle to "jump" off of it. The rig landed nose down. Dead...

No repsonds to my servo or throttle commands. The red led on the ESC lights up at fwd or bwd throttle commands, but no live. So the receiver is functioning. No responds of my servo though. After a minute the ESC is very hot. Tried resetting, no result. Connected the program card, not working. Tried another battery, same problem.

Does anyone have any experience in this issue? Is it dead or what can be done or be the reason.

Do you have other ESCs, receivers, servos and motors to try? The best thing to do is try new components one by one until you pinpoint the problematic component.

Thanks. Tried doing this. Connected the battery to the ESC. Tried to turn it on. After about 4 attempts where it turned itself off, the LED blinked three times. I then tried to find if it had anything to do with my radio control settings. Nothing. Then suddenly a hissing PUFF accompanied with a small smoke signal.... dead.

Got in touch with the ebay seller. I can return it. Now just wondering if I should get another 1080 or get my money back and go and look for something different. My trust in this esc has somewhat shrunken, so am wondering if this is ground or just bad luck...
 
Unusual...... 1080 is generally bulletproof, and simple. Might have been a hung brush, but normally that shouldn’t burn up an esc

Id go with another 1080. Theyre great lil esc's. Ive got 2 of them n no problems with either

ive had the same problem with my 1080 and all hobbywing escs i seem to get all the bad ones

in fact my last 1060 went just like you discribed first the bec went out but everything still light up i hooked up a external bec ran it next time i pluged it in poof only 2 weeks old with maybe 3 runs on it and only ran 2s
changed the esc to a newrain 480 and everything is fine now even on 3s

I have bought two 3s Lipo's with my trx4. A 2600mh 35C and 3300 30C. Does this mean that at full throttle the total Amp is 2.6 x 35 and 3.3 x 30, both being 90+. As then it makes sense why the 1080 failed, being an 80A ESC...

The motor is what draws the current from the battery (the load). The batteries ratings just show what it can provide or source. I think you would be hard pressed to get a crawler motor to draw 90 amps . Even in a bind you would be probably be breaking other parts too at that power level.


If a 3300 mAh battery gives you an hour of trail running you are using an average of 3.3 Amps only. There will be short bursts where you draw many times that when in a bind or accelerating but the ESC should be able to easily handle those spikes and they are short enough to not heat things up too much.

Did you check all cable connections? Crawler are not made for jumps;-)

Batteries never Push Amps they deliver what the ESC demands, and the ESC tries to deliver what the Motor demands and a Brushed 21T 550 never exceeds 80A.

Ok thanks, yea that makes sense. Delivering 80A would make the RC hobby a potential deadly one :roll: As connections where all right I am convinced the 1080 was corrupt. Will wait for a replacement and hope for the best.

Don't be too quick to assume anything - a hard impact (like jumping off a slide) can cause a brush to get hung, even in a brand new motor. Take the motor and spin it by hand to check.

This happened to me and I for the hell of it replaced my batteries in the transmitter and it resolved my issue. The transmitter didn't even do the low battery blinking but I guess it was 'low' or something.
 
Bad servos can take out an escs and recievers. Me mindful of this if you continue to have the problem after replacing the esc.

If you still have issues try unplugging the servo. If that gives you motor power again, then the servo could be bad.
