GreatScott's Radiomaster MT12

Any long term updates on these radios? I am still interested, but still torn on if I want the 4-in-1 or ELRS.
 
I've been using the 4in1 since release. Preordered both versions. Have been using the 4in1 for every vehicle but my long range FPV vehicle that uses ELRS. Being familiar with opentx and therefore the Mt12's EdgeTX I fell right into the programming side with no problems. I don't see myself moving to another tx anytime soon. I've had absolutely no issues and it does everything I need it to in the crawler world.

I'd recommend either to people looking at them. ELRS has a few extra learning curves, but would be a good option for people not looking to bind with currently owned vehicles over multiple protocols. It has both TINY receivers and high channel count pwm receivers with and without telemetry for reasonable prices.

The 4in1 covers the RTRs I've ran into, DSM*, FrSky, FlySky, Radiolink. SLT, Traxxas TRX4m have been added in the most recent firmware last March. Both versions play well with telemetry on each systems I've connected to it.

Only caveat I have when recommending is that EdgeTX is very powerful and very complicated to program. Nothing seems intuitive until you've spent a LOT of time fiddling with it. YouTube guides will be your friend even after you've had some experience with it.


Ps. If you don't like the version you get, you can just buy the external module for the other. 4in1 version might be the better option in this case being that you could add a higher power, 1w or 2w, external ELRS module instead of the internal's limit of 250mw.

That is super impressive that the 4-in-1 is supporting new technologies like that from Traxxas!

Nope, this radio is not new-kid friendly. What it REALLY needs is an "easy page" that allows you to set up simpler set ups, and not have to dig into the radio to set up winches and lights.

I am going to post up a really good 4WS setup I found.

I feel like the popularity of these radios would take off if someone made a "surface mode" skin on EdgeTx that aligns menu layouts, terminology, and functions with most common surface radios. If someone is familiar with Spektrum radios, they can probably figure out a Futaba or Flysky without needing 4 hours of YouTube tutorials because the programming flow is close enough. Definitely not the case with the Radiomaster.

I think to comes down to their target audience, which are the air EdgeTX users that want a pistol-grip radio for their surface RCs. These guys spend a lot more time in the radio, programming and adjusting, so it is a natural transition for them.

Here is a video I shot going through this radio from my perspective, and what I think needs to be done to make it more desirable to the wider RC market.

 
Here is a guide for programming selectable rear steer. This allows you to have the SA switch to mode select rear steering: crab, military, independent.

4-Wheel Steer
MDL
Mixes (5/12)
Go to the channel the rear-steer is connected to (Assume Ch3)
Source: ST
Switch: SA- (middle Position)
- Sets crab-steer to the middle position of Switch SA

Go back to Mixes, copy and edit the CH3 mix above.
Weight to -100
Switch: SA↑ (Inner Position)
- Sets military steer to SA inner
NOTE: To reverse crab and military flip the weights.

Go back to Mixes, copy and edit the CH3 mix above.
Source to S1 or S2 (Pots P1 or P2)
Switch: SA ↓ (Outer Position)
- Sets rear steer source to a slider (P1 or P2)
 
Trims....

By default, switches T1, T2, T3, T4, & T5 are all trims. When using these switches as switches and not trims, the radio gives you audiable alerts as to where the trim is, which is a bit annoying when you are using these switches for winches and such. You can switch between "Trim mode" and "3-Position" mode, removing the annoying verbal indicator, and decoupling the desired switch from its trim duties... Of course, that has to be done for the specific model you are running.

--> Initially the trims are set to '0', and there is one '0' for each of the the trim switches. Change these '0's to '3P' for the trim switches you want to be regular 3-position switches.

As discussed, this radio and its operating system are cantankerous at best. This is one of those many functions that allow you to do what you want with the radio, but have absolutely no intuitive process at all.
