Gramps SCX24 Deadbolt

I bought some 2s Fly 300mah batteries because they would fit in the AA battery compartment of the Redcat Sumo. They weight around 18g compared to 24g for the stock battery.

Strapped it to the front of the Deadbolt to see what would happen.

I then put it on the balance scale.

It doesn't really effect the suspension when the servo hits the battery the shocks are also collapsed.

On my indoor course it will now climb some spots that were impossible before or a struggle. Not sure how much it will effect the run time with the smaller battery but that really isn't that big of a concern for me. These batteries are small enough that you could carry several in your pocket on a trail run. You can also get 2 of them for the price of 1 stock battery.

They come with another connector besides the JST but I just cut it off and shrink wrapped the ends.

Started running the C10 a little more and I noticed that it seemed to have a little more throttle control than the Deadbolt. The C10 has a stock motor the Deadbolt is using the RC4WD FF-030. Decided to run the Deadbolt up the big hill across the top and over the the other hill. Then made the same trip with the C10 it was easier to maneuver. Think I'll try a Barage motor when they come back into stock.

I put CI foams in the Scramblers when I out them on and they were so wide I cut them in half. They are working fine in the back but the front the side walls are folding over. The whole CI foam seems to big so maybe I'll try the stock foams.

That Venom battery is tiny! I'm sure putting it up front helped a lot with stability while climbing.

Surprising to hear the differences in throttle control with the deadbolt vs c10. Were you running the same tires on both or did you have the scramblers on the deadbolt? I swapped back to my stock tires for some indoor crawling last night and the increase in control was nice. The lack of wheel weight was not nice, haha.

The Venmon battery is small, I originally bought them because they fit in the same space as 2 AA's. Did really help with climbing but had trouble going down hill. I wish the SCX24 had real drag brake.

The Deadbolt has Scramblers and the C10 has Wranglers. Might try switching the tires just to see what happens. The larger tires would also change the final gear ratio. The Barage motors are back in stock so I have a couple on the way.

Well if you change out your ESC you can turn on an electric drag brake to supplement the mechanical one. I only suggest this because I'm looking into it for 4ws on my deadbolt. Also gramps I dig the printed links. I made my own custom metal ones with rod ends from mod19 on shape ways. With those I added 2.5mm to the measurements they link to for each truck and manually bent the links in the last quarter of the link so that the holes matched a stock link. Worked surprisingly perfectly on my first go of it and, it doesn't impinge on the uppers at all. I would post pictures but the site I used to host pictures on wants money so thats not happening lol.

I'm having trouble trying to source o-rings for the steering links, using A006 as the search key.

Do you have a catalog #, or know what they were out of?

I can't get anything locally, so I'm trying to order a bunch of stuff online along with my first SCX24. I'm trying to avoid waiting for re-orders if I guess wrong on part numbers...

Amain had the Barrage motors back in stock so i picked up a couple. I put one in the Deadbolt using the included pinion gear which appeared to be the same as the one on the stock motor. To start it is real noisy, need to check the mess again but it didn't seem tight with the tranny out. Tested it on the indoor course and it didn't modulate well in my opinion. It seems to want to sit as you pull the trigger then lunge forward, does the same in reverse. It does have more wheel speed and torque. Maybe the lunging will settle down when I get a good gear mess on it.

To put the whole in the plate for the motor I used a 3D template I downloaded from Thingeversse which worked well. Hold it in place with the existing motor screws, drill the 2 holes. I then slotted them with a small rat tail file. Also had to drill a hole in the cover for the pinion to clear.

Took the transmission back out and filed the holes a little bigger so I could get some more clearance. Got it where I could see a small gap on the tips of the teeth. Put it back together and it was like a totally different vehicle. It's not any more noisy than the stock or RC4WD motor. The lurching is also gone. After a brief run on the indoor course then went down to my 1/10 scale out door course. Had lots of torque & wheel speed. Took some video that still needs editing.

I took the body off to make it easier to work on. When I put it back on I used some hood pin clips to hold it on. Should be much easier to get it off for repairs now.

Good to hear the Barrage motor is working for you. The gravelly sound I was getting a while ago was definitely due to the mesh. I wired everything up with the trans out of the rig so I could watch the spur - there was some serious runout. I ended up setting the motor essentially as loose as I could and that's what I've been running. Minimal noise and no binding.

I'm curious to see what Holmes comes up with. I like my Barrage 050 right now but I may convince myself to try the new Holmes motor just for kicks.

The Deadbolt seemed a little slow to me. Counted the teeth on the stock SCX24 pinion gear, 11t. Counted the teeth on the pinion that came with the Barrage motor, 12t, which is the one I used. Swapped pinions to see if there was a difference.

The Deadbolt had a tad more wheel speed with the 11t pinion. It also drove better in my opinion.

The gear on the left is the Barrage, right is from the SCX24

Also did a video before and after the change

Nice. Did you have any fit issues with the stock pinion? I tried to put the scx24 pinion on my barrage motor at first, but it wasn’t much of an interference fit so I pulled it off and pressed the barrage pinion on.

The pinion fit pretty snug but I did put a piece of dental floss through the hole before I pressed it on. Pushed it on about 1/2 way then cut the bottom tab of the df off while I could still get to it. After getting it into place I cut the top tag off.

Seems like the throttle control is a bit more jerky at the start with the 11t, or, is it that way no matter what?
These seen to be a good alternative to me over getting back into 1/10 crawlers... But, I'm pretty sure I will have some unrealistic performance expectations.
Are you still running it in a droop setup or have you changed the shocks out?

Thanks

I really couldn't tell that much difference between the two. I have 1/10th crawlers too and I like the SCX24's. In my opinion they crawl just as well as the 1/10 when they are in an environment that suits them. I run mine on my outside 1/10 course, yes there are places they will not go but still fun if you pick the right lines. When I built the 1/10 I didn't own any 1/24. I'm considering making a dedicated 1/24 course in a different part of the yard. Got my eye on a garden area.

Not running droop any more. I didn't really like it, didn't fit either my style of driving or my course.
