Finding the best Brushless system for the price

I am building a Axial Capra and want to put a Brushless system in it. I want to spend around $150 for an esc and motor. I have been looking around and do not know what to get. I want to get something that can crawl slow yet can get a little speed for fun. Would appreciate some suggestions!

Check the Capra threads. Several people have already recommended/suggested several brushed & brushless ESC/motor combinations. If you've willing to spend a little extra, you can pick up a Castle Mamba X "Crawler Edition" combo for$213 from most retailers. If that's too much, Castle packages similar combos for $153, but using the Mamba Micro X (instead of the Mamba X).

The "downside" to the Mamba Micro X combos is the weight limit, and battery limit (8lbs max on 3S with lower kV motors, 4lbs max on 3S with higher kV motors). If you plan on crawling, you can go with the Mamba Micro X combo...but, if you are interested in taking that Capra a bit faster (2850kV, or higher), you might want to consider the Mamba X combos. If I remember correctly, I believe one person already tried the Mamba Micro X route with a faster motor, and regretted the choice (ie. burned up the ESC).

May want to consider looking for used. Combos I’d recommend are below

Mamba x or SW4 and revolver 1800kv or 1400kv

Micro x micro and revolver

Mamba x and hh puller pro stubby 2200kv

Mamba x slate 2280 or 1900kv combo

Hobbywing Axe 540 can 2300 or 1800

Thank you for the suggestions. Im looking at the mamba right now and I have a shorty 2s 50c battery. Do you think it would be worth to upgrade to a 3s?

I've got a 3500kv PP and a Mamba X in my Capra, but quickly found out that it was way too much motor. I've now got one of the stubby 2200kv PP's on order and will swap it once it comes in. I've used both a 2s and a 3s and at slower speeds, there isn't a perceived benefit to the bigger battery other than run time.

No, 3s will have more power/speed/grunt.
I only run 3s.
More run time buy the larger mah.
1 10.2 I use 5000mah or larger 3s, the other I use 2200mah 3s.

You may notice some longer run times as with 3S you’ll likely use less throttle to get around than you would with 2S because of the additional wheel speed.

Sorry for the confusion, I was thinking of what Topher and cul8tr said I just failed to finish my thought, you also get more wheel speed/power but you may not use all of that power so you get longer run times.

For your budget, my recommendation would be the Mamba X ESC and a sensored Hobbystar motor. I have this combo (with the 3000kv Pro4 motor) in my Yeti and I'm extremely happy with it. The motor has tons of power, and low speed startup is still extremely good. It won't give you the same low speed startup capabilities as a Tekin or a Holmes brushless motor might, but it's damned good for an "all in one" type of vehicle. The Pro4 motor won't fit into your Capra, but now they have the 540 sized line of Crawler motors, which should work great.

The Holmes TrailMaster BL 540 series are only $69.99 - supposed to be among the best two-pole brushless designs for crawler use.

Lots of kv options, and waterproofed, too!

Although I'd use a Revolver if it was me - or a HH Puller Pro Stubby.

CC SW4 or Mamba X for the Revolver, Mamba X for the Stubby.

Might need to save up a few dollars more for some of these combos, but you'll be happy in the long run!
