It's been a while since I've updated about my old Exceed Maxstone. For a while I had it using the 17mm hubs and 6.5" wheels from my Mad Torque. I kept bending dogbones and stripping difs so I eventually used a Axial small locker case and installed spider gears to open the dif so I (aka my 6yo son) wasn't breaking stuff all the time.
Mods:
17mm hubs and 6.5" tires off of a Mad Torque 1/8
Clocked axles for better driveshaft angle
Custom rear link brace
flipped rear knuckle, added second link to remove tie bar.
Moved battery to front links
Retriangulated links for less torque twist
modded the skid plate to mount lower links for better triangulation
removed axle guards
Heavier rear springs to combat torque twist
Axial 27T motor
I got bored with it after a while and I hated the MaxStone 10 body. The last straw was tearing up the part that the spur gear mounts too, stripping out the D shaped hole. No way to buy just that piece, you have to buy a whole transmission. I went on Ebay and picked up a Wraith tranny. I mounted an aluminum plate to the dig mount and moved my RX and ESC to that new plate.
I never liked the Max Stone body and I've been wanting to replace it for a long time. I've been searching high and low for a Parma Blazer body since it looks like my 1:1 2dr 4x4 Tahoe but I haven't been able to find one. I ran across a great deal on a take-off Deadbolt body. It's one of my favorite Axial bodies so I snatched it up and made a frame to mount it to my Max Stone. I really like the Green on Green, looks much better in person than in pictures. I picked up some cheap take off Maxxis Trepadors and replaced the spider gear with lockers.
She's been much more reliable since I've dropped it down to 1.9's. With the Axial transmission which is flipped 180 degrees from the original I've found that the torque twist is gone. She actually does a great job at crawling. When I get hung up it's mostly on the axles or high center after lowering the truck some. Could be better but I did lower the stance to give it more of a scale appearance. I could also stand to shorten the wheelbase some, which will help the high centers. So far the cost rundown is:
$130 MaxStone
$70 Wheels/tires/body
$33 Tranny
$11 Dogbones
$12 Locked Diffs
$5 Aluminum for the frame
$8 in misc nuts, bolts, etc.
$269 in it so far which is just about the price of the Deadbolt which it has copied. Might as well have just bought a deadbolt right?
I think if the SCX10 deadbolt would have been out when I bought my MaxStone I would have gotten it instead.
