Disabling return to center steering?

I'm running dig and 4ws off a GT5. Rear steer on ch6 and dig on ch4 like most I assume.

I added a thumb steering deal that works decent. The problem I have is while doing super technical stuff, I have to either take my left thumb off the steering to dig (which can ruin a line when the tires center) or try and reach in with my left thumb. (just cumbersome)

I have thought about trying front steering on ch5 (which I may do since it's easy to try) but I'm not sure I'll like that.

Curious if anyone has removed the return to center function on the gt5 or any other radio for that matter?

I dont have a GT5 but does that knob have a return spring you can remove? That might make centering the rear axle a pain unless it has a detent at the center.

Option to removing a return spring is putting an o-ring or rubber band, etc behind the wheel that adds a bunch of friction and doesn't she the sitting to return the knob to center. Certainly easier to try than getting the return spring out then deciding you don't like it and trying to put it back in.

Long term removing the spring as suggested above is more reliable though.

For centering you can use a silver sharpie or some tape to make some marks that line up when centered.

Ch6 has no return to center feature, stays wherever I leave it, I like that.
I want to make ch1 the same way.

Derp, that's a much better idea, I'll try that first.

I just hooked front servo to ch5 and I'm not sure I'd like it just playing in the house.

I think if I can get ch1 to have no return to center, I'll go back to steering with my right hand, and add a larger grippy knob to ch6 to be able to make small adjustments with my right index finger while my hand is on ch1.

Your name sounds familiar, are/were you on pirate4x4?

That worked perfect, thanks @89Industries

Use a grommet I had, 5/16"

The whole thing was too much, cut it in half and it's perfect. Just enough to prevent return.

Side note, the radio doesn't like if you turn it on with the ch1 knob off center. It's still easy easy to feel where it is though.

If you were asking if I was on pirate4x4, sorry, not me.

My one concern with the grommet/o-ring/friction method I suggested is that over time the friction may reduce with wear or change with temperature, etc. So if you're competing and the spring overcomes the friction suddenly and steers you wrong, don't blame me. 😀

i had a old tactic radio set up like that great for slow crawling but sucked moon at anything more than about a half a mile a hour crawl
being able to step back and rest a minute with out the rig doing anything is also really nice

No worries

Fair point, hopefully I'll be able to notice it before it just gives up. Could always shim it with a washer.

Especially when there are 4 functions to worry about (I'd like to add a suck down winch also ) and I like the super technical stuff where sometimes an unintentional twitch of the tires will cause it to fall off the line.

You run front steering on ch6 and rear steer on ch1? Why not run front steering on ch1 with thumb steering and rear steer with ch6? This is also helpful ror the non technical driving when you want to drive one-handed.
