for the build I needed a suitable vehicle to make an extreme cage for.

In walk the Team Raffee / XtraSpeed Land Rover D110 pickup

This is a truly amazing (and heavy) body with insane amounts of detail!

For the time being it's going to run on an MST CFX-W portal chassis.

I won't bore everyone with the details of the chassis build. First impressions are that it is great value for money - again - ordered and supplied by RCMART.

I found a couple of cool looking full size defender based vehicles to swipe some inspiration from

A quick mockup of the chassis to body showed that it should work.

The only modifications needed for a super snug fit was a little bit of creative melting of the front footwell area of the body interior, and 2 little notches cut out of the rear footwells to let the chassis sit high up in the body.

dmdcjKXl.jpg

So I quickly welded up some chassis outriggers that the body will be bolted to

l9Cf80bl.jpg

The chassis rails will ultimately be lengthened to run to the rear of the body, and the wheel base has now been lengthened to suit using M4 stainless threaded rod for the time being.

I've bought a set of the wider fender flares from DJ Designs here in the UK - super nice product and will give some nice wheel tuck.
Wheels at the moment are SSD 1.9 Steel deadlocks and 1.7 RC4WD IROK Tyres.

jAwNyqQl.jpg

Now to start work on the exo cage.

So for the D110 I started off using - FULL exocage mounted from the rockers of the body.
The cage will be totally removable and will slide down over the body once the body has been secured to the chassis.

The cage will be built almost exclusively with 4mm Outside Diameter, 2mm Inside Diameter Stainless Steel tube. Initially tacked together with quick blasts of the mig welder whilst on the body to help get the proportions correct, and then finally finished off with silver solder.

The first evenings work resulted in this.

really pleased with the lines so far!

Next steps are to wrap the cage around the rear screen area and then decide what's going to happen with the front bumper and front fenders.
I might even be tempted to carry on the front fender "cage" by extending it outwards to follow the lines of the wheel arch flares ???

Really enjoying this one - but will it ever see more action than the back yard? who knows! :)

not much love for the UK Trucks then? :hmmm:

anyway - made a bit more progress on the cage.

Did some more boxing in of the back of the cab section and made a start on the rear bed roll bars.

qtI42JQl.jpg

was a right pain to get all the curves the same size - ended up rolling all the big diameter bends round a hole saw bit of the appropriate size and they all match up nice now.

jgsd47Cl.jpg

All the joints have been temporarily mig welded together with little tacks, and will then be tidied up and soldered over.

EVQjnCal.jpg

Then back to Deathproof UK and it's front fender / wheel arch protectors which resulted in the first bits of wastage of stupid expensive stainless tubing! They were a PAIN to make - but I'm happy with the end result - With the 1.9 SSD steel beadlocks and 1.7 RC4WD Iroks you get some perfect wheel tuck in the arches on full articulation.

ZJfG1I9l.jpg

Also made a start on the front bumper. Still quite a bit to add to it but I will probably end up making a couple of different versions of the bumper as I'm not totally convinced on this yet. We'll see.

GmhqPYMl.jpg

bit more tube work - conclusion - I'm really going to need to beef up this suspension

the general final layout of the front bumper is now done

w8r4gRGl.jpg

The lower portion of the front bumper is your typical style - bolted to the ends of the front chassis rails. - Simple tube work with provision for the Warn winch.

The main cage is designed to literally just slide down over the top of the truck, bolt to the rockers, and then I've also added a couple of tabs to the lower front of the cage which line up with some matching tabs on the front bumper - these will then be bolted together at final assembly making the entire structure super rigid.

Also managed to incorporate a small Onetoomanyrcs light bar that I had lying around.
Really please with the fact that I've managed to somehow get both the left and right sides 99% to match each other bend for bend.

Added a couple of braces to the front screen surround section of the cage too.

58gJmSLl.jpg

Also did a spot more work to the rear end.

Added a couple of side "slider" bits that poke out over the top edges of the rear bed area and join to the C-Pillar section of the cage.

CaAN7fXl.jpg

And once that was all lined up did an X brace on the 2 main bed hoops. Also added a mount for 5 x spot lights for the back too

kRyf2mul.jpg

ME9ktIUl.jpg

CaAN7fXl.jpg

9nDXRV1l.jpg

Think I can now say that the bulk of the metal work is now done

Added a couple more braces to the roof area and have added a support mount for the spare tyre too.

Next job is to try and use my friends vapour baster to clean up the cage and bumpers.

great work on all your cages, well done. I also follow jho on Instagram, very heavy and cool rigs

thanks man

to be honest I weighed the whole cage last night and because of the materials I used it only comes in at under 600 grammes.

90% of the cage is made from 1mm walled 4mm outside diameter stainless steel tube which is really light weight

qyIVdtkl.jpg

the heavy part of this rig is without a doubt the actual Team Raffee / XtraSpeed hard body which is ENORMOUS, massively detailed and really over engineered (not complaining about that!)

the MST Chassis and Body (without all if the body pieces in place, without the electronics and battery!) came in at 3.2Kgs !!!!

Some artists use paint and canvas, you use metal tube and tiny trucks :). Fantastic work. What kinds of tools do you use? This is something I want to learn how to do but I'm not sure where to start.

Thanks for the kind words.

as for tools - nothing massively specialised.

a cheap ebay pipe bender that I sometimes use but not always

for bigger radius bends I bend the tube around round things - like mechanics sockets of various sizes or hole saws.

or sometimes just bend in the vice

measure 3 times, cut once of course

a good quality hacksaw

set of decent files

I use a 4mm chainsaw file to fillet the ends of the tubing

Then I have a mig welder

and then use a plumbers MAP Gas torch for doing the silver solder brazing (and flux of course)

One freshly vapour blasted cage

LkN9Mq5l.jpg

So with the cage looking all spangly new from the blasting all that was needed next was a quick coat of etch primer and then a bit of black enamel.

came out great!

For the body I've simply primed the body and then sprayed on some Humbrol Light Grey followed by a satin clear coat - makes for a nice contrast to the gloss black cage

XJhtUQTl.jpg

Doors built up and mounted - can't say I have much confidence in the piddily little magnets found in the kit to try and keep the doors shut! Mirrors / Handles added and fitted the front hood with the metal hinge kit you have to pay extra for.

and mounted up the DJ Designs wheel arches too.

That's one burly-lookin' Defender - those wheel-arches are aggressive!

Love how the exocage comes around the fender edges.

Looking forward to the next build pics...

Looks great! "thumbsup"

What's the purpose of vapour blasting?

cleans up all the residual crud left over from lots of silver soldering / brazing.

It's a nicer, more gentle version of sand blasting.

Only a little update today.

Replaced the ultra weedy MST kit links with some beefy home made M4 stainless ones with Revo rod ends

q4kJZhFl.jpg

broke out the vinyl cutter and made a start on stickering it up

these ones were fun to do! not.

ae1sksrl.jpg

All cut on long life matt black vinyl

UKQViACl.jpg

And the process of building it back up has begun.

When it's all fully secured down this cage is super rigid.

Next I've just got to decide what to do with the front bonnet (hood I think you guys call it )

Might have to go for a raised chequer plate like the 1:1 truck

Took some RC4WD aluminium chequer plate and did the raised bonnet armour after spraying on some satin black

a7QEoxyl.jpg

Then started thinking about what wheels / tyres to run.

soooooooo- this thread kind of needs moving into the 1.55 forum due to the below......

I've been building it using a set of 1.9 SSD Steel deadlocks fitted with 1.7 RC4WD Iroks which look great but I had a set of awesome 1.55 dished CNC Custom Wheels sat here not doing too much, just waiting for the right truck so wanted to try them out along with some 1.55 SSDs too.

1.9 SSD with 1.7 IROK
mEvF0WLl.jpg

1.55 SSD with 1.55 PitBull Growler
4NHNIC5l.jpg

1.55 CNC Customs with 1.55 Rock Beast (too small for this truck, just what was on them at the time) and anodised red Motorworx rings
HSkUSUil.jpg

4iP7yX2l.jpg

Decided to stick with the CNCs but need black rings and Growlers on them

r14DsFjl.jpg

sooooo - took the wheels to pieces and sprayed the rings in satin black, threw on some alien compound Growlers and bobs yer uncle

cwpIQB5l.jpg

s1UQyEul.jpg

8pOXf8Bl.jpg

the eagle eyed amongst you will have spotted a new scale number plate

MB4bFdal.jpg

a few new decals that I cut up too

fyiD8Dhl.jpg

and a bit of new satin black chequer plate on the rear panels too

cwpIQB5l.jpg

So with all that - the body is almost done - just waiting on a few different springs for the shocks to help play with the ride height
- so next is to go onto wiring it all up.

It will be relatively simple.

1080 esc
Power HD 23kg servo
the 2 x winches and controllers
1 x switched Lightbar on the front bumper
5 x spotlights on rear roll bar
then a simple led install in the defender itself

pretty pleased with how angry it's looking

I didn't think you could outdo your cagework - but the paint, trim, detailing, and wheel & tire set are all up to those same standards!

Words fail me...

I DO think this is my favorite Defender build.

Wow - thanks Durok "thumbsup"

Had its maiden voyage this weekend!

And for something so heavy (still yet to weigh it) it doesn't perform too badly! Contrary to belief it's not just the cage making up the weight - with the cage all being tube and not solid rod, it's really not that bad - the bulk of the cage weight ends up being in the front bumper which has a LOT of tube in it, but that's relatively low down anyway. It's the raffee / XtraSpeed body that weighs a tonne - couple that with the ludicrously heavy rubber seats, 2 x warn winches, winch controllers, esc, radio etc. etc.. and it all adds up.

Will try and sort uploading a bit of video for you all too.

All that's left now is tidy up some wiring, sort out a driver, and finish up the snorkel.

Here you go - video of the beast running at the UK Recon G6 event a few weeks back.

we were blown away with just how capable this truck was with its tiny tyres and a LOT of weight (mainly due to the body if truth be told - the cage only weighs in at just under 600 grammes)
