Darkstar's Wraith based Ultra 4 Build Thread

Those look great! I need to get off my duff and finish building mine.

Did you use any silicone on your diff covers? I ran a tiny bead around mine to maybe help keep the mud and dirt out. I even thought about making some out of thin gasket material but haven't got around to it yet.

My next upgrade project.

HPI driver and passenger.

Anyone got ideas on how to get this thing installed?

Latest Update

Got the HPI Interior all cut up and ready for mounting.

I plan on mounting this with some zip ties, to the front windshield bar, and the rear cage bar. I think it came out pretty good.

Up next after everything was mocked in place, I had to come up with a way to cover the opening in the side, where I have the KOH style CFM panels.

Cut up some 26ga steel and made a filler piece, which will be painted flat black. I have 2 holes drilled in the piece so it can bolt behind the side panels, and not go anywhere. It might look a little funny, but I think it will work just fine.

Why did you ditch the Wraith interiour. They look better than the HPI one, and you can fit driver and passanger with legs and all.

For what I wanted to do with the interior, this was a far better option.

My latest update.

Moved the monster sized ESC (RX8 GEN2), from the front, to under the interior, made a plate for the ESC to sit on, and kept it out of the way.

This allowed me to free up some space upfront, and there is no noticeable weight difference.

The decrease in weight has an unreal effect on handling as well. I couldn't believe how much better my wraith handled at speed without the full interior.

The final product, with the extra sides added to cover the difference in the KOH style panels.

Just have to button up some things and see how it looks handles with stuff moved around.

looking really nice, just wondering how you like the trailing arm set up? And also how do you like the rx8? Been thinking of getting one for a while now, just laggin on the price. Would like to get the trailing arm setup to

Does the sway bar limit the extra travel that the trailing arms provide? Forgive my ignorance but I was under the impression that a sway bar is for keeping the wraith steady at higher speeds and the trailing arms were for more travel needed for aggressive climbing?

I really like the trailing arm setup, I feel it handles much better than before. I love the RX8. I've been a Tekin fan from way back in the RC10 days, so I wanted to give it a try. I really like the data logging aspect of as well.

A sway bar can limit the extra travel, depending how stiff the sway bar is.

The primary function of the sway bar is to help eliminate body roll or torgue twist, that you get when going to a trailing arm suspension, but the sway bar requires some fine tuning, to get it just right, this is one of the reasons I like the DLUX sway bar, it offers more tuning than the HR one does, the Axial one, I am not sure, I've never used it.

Do you have any pictures of what you cut out of the chassis to get full stuff with the lowering kit?

I got a Gear Head lowering kit, but it limited my uptravel to less than 1/2" with the 103 Gmade shocks, so I took it off.

The only thing I cut out was the front part of the bumper, where it was hitting the servo at full droop.

I run the Level3 droop kit, I get about 1 - 1/2" of travel out of the front.

I have an extra kit for the front, it's yours if you want it. (Bought 2 on accident)

Ya, maybe... I'd like to see yours.

So you're not bottoming out on the chassis at full stuff? (both tires up at the same time) When my kit was on, the flex (1 tire at a time) was great, but stuff was bad, which would be an issue when hitting a rock at speed or landing off a jump.

No, I bottom out on the shocks before I hit anything else. I'll grab a few pics of it.

Come to find out, I bottom out on the axle truss, not by much, but I do, and that's the only spot.

hmm... I'm not sure how you do that with the lowering kit... Thats pretty good! "thumbsup"

It didn't do too bad, I had to make some adjustments, I didn't have good weight distribution, which was causing issues with steering and the top of the hill.

I had to adjust the shocks to allow it to sit a little lower, and removed the spare tire from the rear.

And other than having a dead battery in the main, which I thought the ESC was thermaling, it didn't do too bad.

Changed out to 32p gears, to gain a little more wheel speed, this helped out a lot.

Up next.

I might change out the shocks, the GMade ones are leaking like it's nobody's business, not sure what I'll go with though.

Also planning on going with the LockedUP RC FI spools, and maybe some hood clips, so I can stop worrying about screwing it down!

Now time to pull the data from the RX8 and see how it was running.

I have bought just about every shock I can an so far the only ones that still haven't leaked are my kyosho shock's I got from supershafty.com they cost a lot but if you want shocks that don't leak they are the only way Togo and they remain silky smooth so far nothing on my wraith makes me as happy as these shocks have
