U.S. Customs wants to ban your pocket knife!

SOG Specialty Knives & Tools LLC, in support with The American Knife and Tool Institute (AKTI) opposes U.S. Customs' attempt to classify assisted-opening knives and all one-hand-opening knives as switchblades.

U.S. Customs proposes to bypass Congress and expand the switchblade definition to include all knives that open with one hand. These include multi-tools, traditional pocket knives, one-hand openers, as well as assisted-openers.

Statistics to consider about the knife industry and the possible effects of this ruling:

* U.S. Sporting Knife Industry has a $5.9 Billion Economic Impact on U.S. Economy
* 3,881 direct U.S. Employees at 61 Companies
* 35.6 Million Households Own Pocket Knives; 24.8 Million Own Hunting Knives
* Assisted-opening and one-hand-opening knives are 80 % of All Knives Sold
* 30-40 Million Public Safety, Non-Issue Military, Construction, Recreational Users

Material compiled and provided by AKTI

The majority of Americans who carry and use one-hand-openers every day need them for their jobs. They use them to save lives as well as for scores of recreational activities.

If U.S. Customs succeeds, it could lead to effectively banning all folding knives from interstate commerce.

We're asking you to register your opposition to the U.S. Customs' plan (19 CFR Part 177) to re-classify assisted openers and all folding knives.

You comments must arrive at U.S. Customs no later than June 21, 2009.

If you don't think your letter will arrive in time, please fax or email a signed copy to us and we will forward it to US Customs on your behalf. Our fax number is (425) 771-6230. Please submit responses to us by noon on Friday, June 19th, 2009.

Customs...hmmm...so does that mean if you dont travel out of the country regularly that youd be ok??

Jon

From this line I'm thinking their intentions aren't that simple.

They're not gonna be happy till we're left completly unarmed.

Why do Americans have the need to carry a weapon at all times? Just because it says you can? Life in the US must be pretty damn dangerous if you have to constantly carry a gun or knife for "self-defense". No I'm not making fun of you guys, I'm just wondering.

Like my dad always said.. " It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it"

.......
Just because it says you can?

That is one reason, the second is there are lunatics everywhere and you never know what could happen.

Crime will never be gone. Atleast we have a chance to defend ourselves if need be.

Now for my question,
If most Canadians would carry, Do you think the crime rate would go down?

There's barely any crime where I live, last murder was 2 1/2 years ago, assault on somebody was about a month ago, armed robbery about 6 months ago (guy with a knife at a coffee shop). I don't feel a need to carry, if I lived in Halifax NS then yea I probably would since there's a shooting or stabbing there almost everyday because of a wigger "gangwar", but where I live in Moncton no I don't feel the need to carry, I do have a knife but only carry it when I go to Halifax.

For me, I use my box cutter for work (retail) and carry it with me most of the time just out of habit. I haven't had to use it for self defence or to cut my self out of a seatbelt after a wreck but also really, really do not want to be put in either situation. Fortunetly my size is probably a pretty good deturent to having a somewhat sane person come after me too though.

since when are multi tools one handed opening pocketknifes i don't know anyone that can open the knife of a multi-tool with one hand. pliers sure but you're not very threatening with those.

I don't know, those pliers could make for one nasty nipple twister;)

Why do you need all those weapons in your kitchen? Are you afraid a carrot is going to jump out of the fridge and try to rape you?

I have never considered my knives to be weapons. I have carried one every day of my adult life (and also during my childhood growing up out in the sticks) to use as a tool. I have dozens of knives including switchblades which are legal to own in Oregon. I have never thought to use them against anyone as a weapon.

I have held a concealed handgun license for over 15 years although I have not carried since my son was old enough to walk and pick things up. I made the choice to keep my firearms locked in a safe. When I feel I am going somewhere where I may want a defensive weapon(the hood) or on a road trip(in my state) then I will carry my pistol. I don't go looking for trouble because I have a gun. It is easier to run away and call the cops than to shoot someone and have to call a lawyer. Shooting someone in self defense is the last thing anyone wants to have to do, but, it is my right as an AMERICAN to own one and defend myself.

Do you carry a spare tire in your car?

How often do you actually need that spare tire?

Even though you don't need it in day-to-day life you never know when you might need it to get back home to your family.

Same deal with carrying weapons for self defense.

I carry because, at the end of the day, I want to go home to my family.

I drive a truck regionally. A couple weeks ago I had to go into manitoba to get a load of potatoes to bring down into the states. On my way home, I hit something and it went up between my tires and knocked the front fender mounts off of my trailer. The fender was swinging in the wind and rubbing the tire and about to be ripped off and tossed out into the road. I don't carry a host of tools with me and all I had was some spare CB coax and a knife. I used my knife to cut the coax and used the coax to tie up the fender and secure it from becoming a road pojectile that could go through someones windshield.

Knives are the handiest tool in the world. They can become a survival tool if you should become stranded and could mean the difference between life and death is some cases.

Just found out the Department of the Interior is going to come thru every residential neighborhood and prune back all the tree branches more than 26mm in diameter, to keep sticks out of the hands of domestic terrorists and others who would use them as weapons. Private ownership of sticks less than 26mm will be allowed, but must be registered.

Also, the newly-formed Department of Hope And Change (DHAC) has announced that all bad attitudes must be registered. A list of current owners is being populated using the Permanent Records from your school.

on my leatherman wave, the knife blades are on the outside, and yes, they can be opened one handed, with just my thumb... That thing goes with me everywhere, and I use it for work as well as recreation... would be pissed if I couldn't carry it...

Will not touch the gun debate with a 10 foot pole... but will say, that if the gun laws in Canada weren't so retarded, I probably would carry. Not because I have ever really felt the need. Can't recall a single situation in my entire life where I felt like my life was in danger. But... you never know...

That's the best time to start. If you didn't have life insurance and you suddenly passed...then your family tried to get a policy on you after the fact...little late now.

It's like security systems for your home. You're better off having one from the get go before something happens rather than waiting for that "something" to finally happen to you...then you go out and get the system.

The point of carrying is to have your own personal security system for when you need it. You may never need to use it...but it's there.

As far as a knife...I don't carry a knife for protection really. I carry a knife because it's a nice tool to have and use it for all kinds of things throughout the day...it comes in handy. I carry a Gerber all the time, and just started carrying a small assisted folder clipped inside my pocket.
