Computer help... Zonealarm is killing my XP

I've had this problem with ZoneAlarm Pro ever since my brother installed it on my laptop when it was new. I want to uninstall it now, but I'm worried about how bad it'll mess up my pc.

If I shut ZAP down, Windows (XP) goes all crazy. I can't load any applications, can't close any, the shut down menu changes to the safe mode one and even then, I still can't shut it down/restart because it tells me I don't have admin privileges. The exact same thing happens whenever I try to update it.

I'm scared of uninstalling the damn thing, I'm worried Windows will sink into this permanent state of not-workiness:lol:

I run registry repair apps regularly, they have not fixed the problem. Any ideas?

inb4 windows sucks, I'm thinking about changing to Ubuntu after exams.

Run your registry repair, and have it make an image, or save "last" so you can restore it if uninstalling CrapAlarm dont work.
If your program wont allow you to "save last" then download this one.

After that, uninstall ZoneAlarm
Go to this site and download Sygate Personal Firewall V5.6.2808
Its free and about the best I have ever used. Lets you select sites to allow and disallow obviously, but the best part is, it just works, doesnt bother you every two seconds with warnings. If something aint supposed to come through, it doesn't and if it somehow does, the next program stops it dead.

Install that, and then download AvastAnti virus home edition from here
Its the best antivirus around. Catches stuff before it even has a chance to affect your computer. Lets you store it in a chest or delete it immediatly, will search each and every hardrive, and partition and CD and Sd/USb/whatever you got card.

Then when your all done, run this defragger and all your problems will be solved. I dare anyone to find a better defragger than this. I've looked and looked and tested and tried hundreds of em... Nothing beats JK Defrag

The cool thing, all these are free. No 30 day trial or any crap like that.
Now, go have fun.

I use these things and never, NEVER have anyproblems.

I know heh I'm seriously thinking about it, but only after I'm done with exams, can't be bothered with an OS change now.

Thanks for your help!

I had a problem with mcafee as well just now (both core temps >85*C) and I ripped that out, I really need to format. I'll let ZAP be until I'm home and have a full r/c-PC working day with a techie friend of mine.

I've only just gotten this interested in the welfare of my 3yr old laptop in the last few months when I noticed that it still specs pretty high for such an old model (HP Pavilion DV5191). I was going to build a budget desktop and leave this for field castlelink duty, but it turns out I don't need to upgrade yet since I'm not into gaming.

Thanks again!

Make the switch to Windows 7 RC1, it will work till June 2010.

When I ran XP, I used to do clean installs at least once a year, once things slowed down. I know I am not the only one, its a great way to clean up all the junk you have installed but no longer need. I keep all my music, pictures, and movies on seperate hard drives. The main hard drive is only for the OS, programs, and some files that I save to my documents for convinence. I backup the my document folder and install files before doing a clean install.
